Fast paceline with a dozen hammerheads.
A few of them were 50-100 meter off the back, flat road, solid group.
I'm sitting at the back of six when a dog shot out from the right.

#4 guy gets his front wheel clipped so he goes down.
#5 guy is a 16 year old kid. Good rider, nice kid.
He goes down of course, we're 12" off each others wheel so zero time to react.
I'm next to hit the deck.
Next day I pulled the data off my Garmin.
We went down at 32.2mph

My 12 year old Masi has a big gouge in the fork, Campy Chorus levers are mangled as is the RD.
The kids new Trek is cracked so that's two totaled bikes plus helmets and kits all around are shredded.

Rider #1 is road rashed nine ways to Sunday.
He went to the ER to get checked out.
X-rays showed nothing broken but he's sore as can be.
The kid was concussed.
Spent the day in the ER. Texted me that he's really hurting but nothing broken.
I came out in pretty good shape, some road rash but just took a shower and had my wife slather on antibiotic creme and slapped on a dozen bandages.

New bike time?
Nah, I'll throw some upgrades on a Carl Strong Ti bike and call it good. I've been getting dogged by some buddies over my ancient rim brake, 12 year old bike. Couple of them said this is my opportunity to join the disc brake and electronic shifting brigade but, nah.

Yikes. Glad you’re ok.

How about the dog, is it on crutches?

I'm of the age where I'm forgetting the Campy (of whatever) bits I was so fond of but get to get reminded of all my tender spots every night.

Dogs are my main concern after deer, Whenever I hear a dog bark I try to locate where it is. I've been bitten four times. Twice on my bike and twice while walking with my dog. I always called animal control and they came out and impounded the dog and held it for ten days to check for rabies, at the owners expense. Dogs don't always bark, sometimes they come out of nowhere. I hit our neighbors dog in 2011. Fractured my left elbow and major case of road rash.

Glad you are o.k.

Three dog stories:
1. During an MS ride north of Albany, we rode by a German Shepard barking ferociously, but he was roped to the porch. He broke the post and chased one of the riders (my daughter) dragging a bit of the post. She escaped unscathed but a bit frightened.
2. During a different MS ride, a dog came at me from the left. My usual practice with attacking dogs is to dismount and keep the bike between us. I usually mount and dismount on the left. I realized I needed to practice dismounting on the right. In this case, I just sprinted away and fortunately was not caught.
3. More recently, I was riding near home and heard a dog barking behind me. I was startled because the barking got quite closer very quickly. It turned out to be a dog barking out of a window of a passing car.

That's the height of dog laziness, having Uber drive them around to barks at cyclists

Thanks and condolences for your very well written ride/crash report. That sucks, sorry.
I have no advice about what to do next other than I wish you a speedy and complete recovery.

2 cents worth: it's the unleashed dogs that don't bark that scare me the most.
As for deer, I have the scars.

Probably the scariest encounter of my life was a Mennonite farm German Shepard that would come racing across a field from a km away totally silent just bare teeth of intent. It happened twice, in both cases we barely escaped sprinting. But after second time we never returned to that area. Smokey mentioned the dog ripping post loose triggered that memory.

I’ve had grizzly sightings and encounters that were less scary. The one time we almost got trampled by a moose at Cape Breton was close though although that was mostly the surprise factor.

Hey Smokey: Yes! Barking dogs in a car scared the cr*p out me more than once as well! Almost as scary is a flock of Harleys in double pace line formation (that's a thing for them) that they don't want to break on a narrow road when they roar by 1" from my handlebars. A pox on all their houses!

LSD: Harleys are noisy and don't sneak up on us. I'm more concerned about people on cell phones.

Good points, but I still jump out of my skin when those things happen!
