This summer the RCMP in Whistler put out a bait bike and caught some city folk with a trailer that held the bait bike and 5 or 6 other stolen high end mountain bikes. Busted. The individuals were "known to Police" as they say.

that is awesome!! Those are some great bikes, glad they were recovered.
The police here need to do the bait bike thing, bike theft here is getting really bad, we have a client at the shop who runs a guide service who just had six bikes stolen, most of them high end Santa Cruz's, I hope they get caught

hey bob, it's not clear from the pace line thread if the bikes were whole when stolen, and then stripped down. did the victim get the complete bikes back erwha?

Not sure since the pictures only show frames sans wheels. I tweeted him about it > Tweet

Okay, I share this hoping to add to the awesomeness of the story...

I was living in Washington, DC and put my commuter bike outside one night, on my way out to see some music. It was late, I ran back inside to finish getting ready. I mighta heard one more song, had one more beer. Not clear, it was late and I'd been having a good night. Not too long though, and I lived in a quiet neighborhood and it was leaned between two bushes.

I came out to leave...it was gone. I walked all around the house, assuming a friend was playing a joke. Nope.

I spent all of the next day scouring the city, asking at shops, talking to cycling pals I knew.

The next day was July 4th. Spent the day riding around on another bike, seeing the festivities, keeping my eyes open. Was heading home for a pit stop, not far from my own 'hood when...what do I see up ahead...some fukface riding my bike! (custom paint, easy to see)

I rolled up alongside of him and told him, very unpolitely to get off my bike immediately. He started to tell me how he bought it used at a local shop. "That shop doesn't sell used bikes." He also told me he bought it for $125. Ha, the saddle was worth more than that.

I'd had enough talk, cut in front of him, drove him into parked cars, told him to get off my bike immediately, as he swung his leg shoved him into the cars and told him, unequivocally, not to steal other people's bikes. He tried to tell me he bought it, I told he to go get fuked, as I rode off, ghost riding my second bike.

The best part: he was in Birkenstocks with a guitar strapped to his back. He was also much bigger than me, but I think he knew the fury inside of me would drop him in his tracks.

I'm still uncertain if he bought it or happened to walk by and take it. But, if he bought it he knew it was hot. It was too nice to sell for $125.

The annoying part: due to his big dumb Birkenstocks he'd taken off my very nice steel toe clips and straps and likely tossed them in the bin.

Yeah, never a good idea to leave your bike unlocked and I've learned that lesson BUT...how cool is it to catch the d-bag riding my bike while I was out cycling...on another bike? I still smile thinking about that encounter.

Also fun to scare the heck out of people much bigger than you due to evident righteousness.
