My son partook in his first charity ride on Memorial day. 40 miles for a local organization that deals with transitional housing for the homeless. About 2 weeks ago, I asked him if he wanted to do it. I have a coworker who takes his whole family on this ride every year. It meanders through the suburbs, linking a series of 3-400ft climbs. He said yes and did not do any special prep or training. The forecast was for rain, but instead it was dry and finished with sun and a tailwind which he and my friend's son thought was pretty fun.
He is now fully aware of the alternate universe of lycra-clad cyclists, which includes the aero-helmet, aero-bike dudes on charity rides and can now see that his dad is actually quite moderate with his obsession.
