While I am not the least bit upset that Froome will miss his chance this year to equal the tour record of 5 wins, unfortunately the last bit if drama may have just gone out of July.

Dumoulin does not look like he will be able to contend in France and there is no one else capable of taking on the SKY juggernaut. Most of the big contenders bet on the Giro.

Ineos confirms that Froome is out of the Tour. Will be "quite a long time before he races again."

Dumoulin may come around still. His path to Dauphine wasn't ideal. Depends on knee. In last scan they found a tiny piece of metal. Question now is whether to do surgery ahead of tour or not.

he said he is still experiencing swelling in the knee....I don't really see how he can be close to 100% by July. he could come into form by the end of the Tour, but it will likely be too late for him with no TT's.

A year ago, I would have given Porte a chance at challenging (assuming he could actually make it to the finish)....this year? no way.

This si shaping up to be a battle of stage wins with the GC largely processional.

The knee has been fine in Dauphine. He put it to a good test in that extended training ride stage 2. But the piece of metal is an uncertain factor. Makes you wonder about the earlier scans. It should have been removed already now there'sno good time for minor surgery

Ineos have a strong squad but Thomas may well have been a one trick pony and Bernal while very talented could turn out to be another Quintana when push comes to shove. We will see.

Listen to the Cycling News podcast from the other day where they interviewed Dumoulin.....knee definitely doesn't sound like it is fine. Could be a smokescreen, though...who knows.

The biggest question re: Thomas is that his run-up to the TdF has been less than ideal. His showing at the Tour de Suisse will be telling. I don't realy rate Bernal as a contender at this point, especially after breaking his collarbone before the Giro (although he may have recovered by now).

I don't see any other challengers....Kruiswijk? Can't climb well enough. Porter....Pfft. Quintana? LOL. Landa? maybe but probably too taxed after the Giro and he always has some excuse or a bad day. Bardet or Pinot? Too inconsistent....always a bad day for them.

My overall prediction....Ineos takes the jersey (maybe not Thomas) after the TTT, immediately coughs it up on stage 3. Takes it back on Stage 6 via Thomas and locks down the field to the finish.

Painful injury. A couple months off his bike and several months to recover, if ever. love him or hate him too bad...

Not sure when podcast was done but Dumoulin gave knee a thumbs up immediately after stage 2. Incidentally velonews.com had an article on knee still being problematic same day but it was based on outdated info from before Dauphine.

His TT today was descent enough for someone still working towards peak form.

Yeah, this may have been it for an attempt at five. He'll be another year older next year and there's a lot of upcoming young competition.

The only "positive" is that it sounds like this is a similar injury to Valverde's from 2017 (now appears to be a broken femur?) and he came back as strong as ever....(insert suspicious glance here).

Isn't this Froome's 2nd recon crash? All I've seen so far is that it is his femur,. not pelvis, so if that's right, probably the better and simpler injury. Of course, the SS pin he might get will hurt him big in the mountains until they take it out. Not light! Even a ti pin won't be of weight weenie numbers. (My brother got a SS years ago. Skiing accident. I've hefted it.)

There's room for a joke here. 4-time Tour de France winner, premier stage racer on this planet, has to drop out of an 8-day stage race after hitting the wall in the ITT recon. And funny, the picture in the CyclingNews text updates immediately below the announcement (at 14:53:01) shows Froome in kit with a clenched smile, like he is in real pain!

I wish him well, but he really should take to the advice/blessing common among motorcycle riders. Shiny side up, rubber side down.

Edit: I've hit a wall.  Concrete and steel.  With the back of my shoulder at ~18 mph.  Not fun and the long term consequences are for life.  (Broken collarbone, several ribs, lots of soft tissue damage, collapsed lung.  Off the charts pain.)

Just read the VeloNews report. Chilling. Got me thinking of that gruesome crash in the Giro a few years ago. A careless look back, a sneeze.

This may speed my move to tubulars. Bad things happening on descents can be really bad.

The initial report I linked to had said a possible broken pelvis...has since been updated...now sounds like a compound fracture of his femur. Yikes.

Femur, elbow, ribs.

Dumoulin commented that the particular location was known for its gusty winds and it was on his radar as to watch out for before heading out on his recon ride. Blowing your nose at 60kph on a TT bike in a spot like that just seems completely preventable.
