Wow - respect. There's some mad talent out there. Did anyone see the video of Uran on his TT bike going 45kph only to be comfortably drafted by a local farmer riding his old road bike, no clipless pedals or anything and with a pack on his back? Wild. https://road.cc/content/news/cycling-live-blog-9-june-2020-274311#live-blog-item-16121 |

Actually, on looking again at video, the dude's bike wasn't that old and did have a clipless system, although he wasn't using it wearing his big work boots. So he was probably decently trained and experienced. Still, very funny. When this was originally posted on a Dutch news feed there was a sidebar story on Boogerd getting passed by the local mail carrier while on a training ride on the Cauberg. The mail carrier probably rides that hill daily though, haha. |

I couldn't get in without subscribing. So I still haven't seen the answer to "what is everestinig?". My days of riding fixed and just one cog in big hills is over. No longer acceptable to either my knees or butt. The fix gear love is still there but I have to accept stopping and changing cogs. (Wheel flips, wrench and chainwhip for the big days so I can have fun coming down.) |

So I still haven't seen the answer to "what is everestinig?". Everesting is climbing the altitude equivalent of Mt. Everest in a single ride, on a single climb. Climb up, turn around, come back down, turn around....lather, rinse, repeat until you have climbed +29K feet. To be an "official" attempt (there is a website for it), it needs to be a single ride and, as noted a single climb that you do repeatedly and can contain no down hill section during the climb. You also cannot do a loop....you have to u-turn after your descent and then climb back up the same climb. it has become quite the trend during the COVID19 shut down....people with time on their hands to train and no place to show off their fitness. Shortly after the whole thing started, there was a massive day on Zwift with people doing virtual Everesting on the Alpe du Zwift climb. |

CK - someone should have told the poor kid who broke the Everesting record the other week only to be DQd because for one ascent he crested and rode the other side of the hill. So much effort & suffer - nothing to show for it. |

CK - someone should have told the poor kid who broke the Everesting record the other week only to be DQd because for one ascent he crested and rode the other side of the hill. So much effort & suffer - nothing to show for it. The rules are published all over the web....basically 3 big ones: single ride, single climb repeated and break times are included. Record 8,848m (29,029ft) of total elevation gain. Follow one route on one hill. Descend on the same route you climb. No sleep – you must complete the challenge in a single stint. Breaks (eating, drinking, recharging) are included in your time. You must reach the summit of the hill every time. Are you referring to Buchman? If so then he blew it by that one ascent and also took a break that was not included in his total time. Not that I really care that much either way....helluva accomplishment however you do it. But if you are gonna go for the record, check the rules. |

Yes I think it was Buchman. That was a solid d'oh moment. I mean, I know the rules even though I have zero intent of ever trying this. Have two people in my circle (or do we call it bubble these days?) who did. We have a "hill" (our equivalent of Alpe) that is popular for it (it takes 10 ascents to Everest; max I have done is 4) although in view of recent strategies involving shorter climbs there are probably better spots locally (there's a straight steep 2km climb specifically but its a bit traficky). |

Everesting is overrated. They should try Mooning instead. On a singlespeed, with one crank. |

Only way I am ever Everesting is if I travel or do it virtually. And since there is no chance I will waste my legs on a bike trip doing that, it ain’t likely gonna happen. I did some quick mental calculations on doing it virtually on the Alpe du Zwift. I normally go up that climb in just under an hour, but obviously that is not a pace I could sustain for any kind of duration. So figure maybe 90 minutes per ascent (probably conservative, but a reasonable number). It would take you 8.5 trips up to Alpe to get the elevation you need, so ~12 hours on the trainer. Hard pass! |

“Well looks like I gotta do it again,” Morton wrote. Rather nonchalant about it. |

Would they allow an attempt that included the 2 U-turns at top and bottom but the distance between the turns was reduced to zero? If they did, I could do this in my driveway. Roughly 3' elevation difference so it would take me about 9600 climbs. Around 100 miles of counterclockwise ovals. Recovery would happen in a locked, padded and monitored room. Slightly more serious - this Everesting strikes me as a record attempt doing something completely useless. I have far more respect for Beryl Burton and her 1000 mile TTs across the countryside (and at a time when women simply didn't do such thngs). Ben |
