OC, I was surprised and perplexed to see VDP with his arms crossed during his national anthem. Is that normal Netherlands behavior or was he making a statement?

The ability of MVDP to clip back in on steep ramp after he briefly came undone in itself was worthy of gold.

No kidding. I watched that a couple of times and was slack jawed every time. Most people would have found themselves in an ingloriously heap at the bottom of the ramp.

Wout's puncture was a bummer....and completely altered the race. I think MVP would have won regardless, but I was pulling for Wout.

The skills on those guys are amazing. Couldn't believe how they just plowed through the sand.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Certainly not a statement. Probably just reflects the cold weather and or absence of spectators.

In the Women's U-23, a Dutch girl named Fem van Empel won the jersey. Anyone know if she's related to the Empella guy? When I raced cross I had 2 Empellas, I loved those bikes.

Ad van Empel the Empella founder is an uncle apparently.

Interesting so like Evenepoel she is a talented soccer player. Did some mountain biking on side and won a race out of the blue. Then added cyclocross and here we are.

Thanks Oranje. I could see where someone with a soccer background could use that speed and explosiveness (and the running) to good use in 'cross... That said you see successful "transfers" like that girl bursting on the scene like a meteorite more on the women's side, it's rare to see someone coming out of the blue and winning a huge race in the men's fields due to how deep they are.
