| Yup, and that is why the day after finish of Tour we already have the big names riding nighttime laps around the church in small towns in Netherlands and Belgium. The financials of that circus are still important; no rest for the wicked. Tonights big question is whether Mollema will "beat" Kittel in Boxmeer :-) |

| So your name is Ten Dam, you've just ridden your ass off for 3 weeks and get to split 52k for the effort with your mates. Right after finishing in Paris you race home, kiss the wife and kids. Next day you put the bike on your car to drive to Boxmeer to ride an evening crit, collect the cheque that goes with it and drive back home at night. Repeat for a week or 2. The life of a pro. |

Exactly. I am pretty sure Nibali got less prize money than Froome for winning the Giro. But his salary is $3 million/year. |

| Yes the top dogs make good salary but for Joe Average pro cyclist the kermiskoersen are still an important part of the annual income equation. There was an interesting article yesterday (in dutch of course) as to why these guys would go straight from 3 weeks of gruelling riding to these circus events. Money for most. |

In a sense I think that many other sports are just way out of touch with reason. I think a lot of the prima donnas look at Joe Blow getting x and think I am better so I need more money that him. And management gives it to them and charges more to fans buying tickets or whatever other trinkets they try and sell us. I hear that the Jersey business in NHL hockey is huge dollars for the teams.
Some kids put everything into a sports career much like others put everything into school. School taught careers usually last longer than 15 or so years though whereas a pro cyclist lasts about that maybe 20 if he's lucky. Then what. Can you you Jens back in school now? Or or -7 in school? Buying finished term papers paying for someone smart to do his tests for him? |
