No doubt, if I'm ever in a bar fight I'd want a sprinter helping me out not some climber or GC guy... what's he going to do? "Hang on, mate, we'll just run 'em to death."

don't sneeze around the GC guys. You will break collarbones and cause bruising

even the classics guys that seem so big are really kind of scary/skinny

Sprinters? I dunno, Cav could start a fight, but I'm not so sure he'd finish one. What you want is a really good Kilo rider.

who needs a women's Tdf when the men's winner looks like that. I swear those legs look like they belong on a female

The activity around which this forum centers produces practitioners who are rather lean, and selects for and rewards people who have low body mass. At 6' and 165#, I often feel like the world's biggest fatass at bike races.

Over on the barfightnation.com forums, there's a thread with a picture of a big Otto looking dude that someone posted, with the caption "I sure wouldn't want him on my team in a stage race."

"At 6' and 165#, I often feel like the world's biggest fatass at bike races." - hey those are my specs!

Good point. Still, if memory serves back in the 80s most racers were more "regular" looking whereas over time we've had this trend towards the lean extreme. My hypothesis is this. Back in the old days you still had a lot of guys literally grabbed from the street and turned into pro cyclists as support riders, pack filler. It was much easier for a talent to stand out from the pack. These days, even Joe Average cyclist has a history in the sport, a professional training program, etc, etc. It has become a lot harder for the truely talented to escape from the clutches of the peleton. That is perhaps why extreme measures are taken, extreme weight loss, special sauce, etc. etc.

And yeah, those legs are scary.

As a guy who has been in more bar fights than I care to admit, being able to handle yourself in a street fight is more about skill and heart than size. Most big guys haven't had to fight because of their size and lose their enthusiasm for the altercation after getting hit once. The ones to watch out for are the skinny dudes who want to fight.

Made you look!! JS makes a good point.

OC, I think what you're also seeing is that sport becomes more and more specialized over time. As a sport develops more of an audience and participant base, it can be more selective about who enters and progresses. I'm not talking about any grand design deal here, just how things work. The junior racers 8 or 10 years ago looked like kids - take a look at any 7th grade class picture and the local bike race would look like a somewhat more active version of that cross section of kids. Now, they look like bike racers. They started off with the general body type and have reinforced it. They aren't just some kids who stunk at stick and ball sports and wound up doing that thing the weird kids do, they chose bike racing and want to be bike racers. Globalization, TV and internet coverage, the HWSNBN effect... Whatever it is, the marketing department for attracting kids to cycling got better in the last however long. More kids coming in equals more kids getting weeded out earlier, in favor of boys who might be mistaken for girls.

Which then leads to parity at a crazy high level, which means your situation of ever more extreme measures to differentiate.

Same for all sports. My daughter is 11 (by one week), and the 10 year olds she lined up against this year look like teens (at least the winners anyway). She was near the top of the ladder, but one week later her times against the 11 and 12s put her back to the bottom.

So, that progression and training kicks in early, and the field is much deeper.

Her swim coach was a national class swimmer who missed the Olympic team by a few miliseconds (first alternate). His time was 3rd or 4th best in the US. Fast forward 15 yrs and the guy wouldn't place top twenty today.

It's a different world, with different expectations for all the good and bad that brings our young ones.
