Saw where the expected new big sponsor of the former Argos-Shimano team backed out, leaving a big hole which has now been filled by Giant. Read the story first on CN then saw it here, too. CN made it sound like the deal fell through at the last minute. Good move by Giant to step in and at least provide temporary sponsorship. Makes you wonder why a sponsor would do that. All the big-name riders have inked deals based on that sponsorship and then they pull the plug at the 11th hour. Hopefully, it was due to something reasonable and not a case of last-minute cold feet. This is not a "pack fill" team (aka Vacansoleil/Cofidis/etc); they were/are an established team of sprinters capable of taking a good amount of important & impressive wins. Maybe not the high profile of OPQS/Cannondale/Sky but easily in the top 50% (IMHO). |

The sport is about to implode. Trek, Cannondale and Giant are now title sponsors for 3 Pro Tour teams (or whatever they are called now). It is just not a financially sound business model for the bike industry to support teams at this level as the title sponsor. |

I was always intrigued me that a chain of gas stations would sponsor a bike team. Though come to think of it, maybe it's a pattern that goes back to 7-11.

The sponsorships that work out are often big, non-cycling companies where the CEO simply loves the sport and the sponsorship money, in the big picture, isn't a big deal. And being non-cycling, bad things happening in the racing don't really affect those companies much at all. The much smaller cycling companies have to watch the bottom line and bad things (like the LA/PED/UCI scandals hurt them a lot. Of course, with the big companies, there is the risk that CEO #1 leaves, CEO #2 has no love for cycling and at the next business year, sponsorship goes, Quite abruptly. Ben |

I got an idea for a start up company but need investors to support a cycling team. Find A Dentist Dot.Com registry of dentist world wide. If you are a dentist you need to be on this list,if you are an investor here is your chance of a lifetime to get in on the ground floor. Well it's a thought, who'd of thunk starting a web site displaying all your personal data, where you live, who you live with along with photos would be a good idea? Now that schmuck Mark Zuckerberg is a billionaire. Dentists and bikes go together like ham and cheese. |

The man I owe a deep debt to (and who passed away last summer). Ralph Galen, one of the founders of and long time president of the Charles River Wheelmen of Boston, was instrumental in getting me into racing though I will never know if that was his intention. He was an orthodontist. Ben |

I'm waiting for a Pro Tour team - maybe Sheetz Gas or Team Wawa?
(you have to be in the Mid Atlantic to get that one)

I'm waiting for a movie company to get into cycling. They could change the team kit depending on what movie they are promoting at the time. Action movies would be the best. Even kid movies. They could really have some fun with it if the UCI would open up their minds a little and allow the changing of kit designs during the season. Getting Hollywood involved in kit design would be interesting.
