Seriously? Who pedals at 50rpm.... 3 year olds and old ladies on beach cruisers, neither of whom are likely candidates to move to 110rpm.

http://www.bicycling.com/training/workouts/four-rides-to-shed-pounds-and-get-faster/spin-ups

"Spin Ups
Why they work: One study found that when cyclists upped their cadence from 50 to 110 rpm, their energy demands increased tenfold, boosting calories burned. Spinning faster, rather than grinding a higher gear, also keeps your legs feeling fresh longer."

Never cared for Bicycling mag. Not sure exactly what it was, but they never really hit on anything that made me want to read more. Seemed like a lot of generalized fluff and what I might call "mainstream" topics. Don't subscribe to anything currently, but I used to read Cycle Sport, Velonews, Road Bike/Mountain Bike Action. Back in the day I used to read Winning mag; had a lot of Euro-centered stuff.

Well I haven't counted or measured my cadence in a long time but it's probably less than 110 but more than 50. I will admit to doing spin-ups back in the day. But a season of track racing is what really had the biggest effect on my cadence.

Dale, I hope you remove bicycling from your rss feed or avoid whatever click-bait thingy you just followed. The options for cycling reading material these days are wayyyy better.

Somebody in my friends list "liked" Bicycling so it pops up on his stuff occasionally. I did not inhale.

"Laterally stiff but vertically compliant!"
"I was able to do the same climb in a larger gear!"

It's like Paul Sherwin's bag of cliches, recycled over and over again.

LAB used to include Bicycling as a freebie with membership. When that stopped, I stopped getting the magazine -- not enough interest to pay extra for a subscription. LAB moved to e-zines instead.

Old fart eruption coming: tune out now!

About 20 years ago, Bicycling was actually a really good mag. Real reviews, useful info. Even willing to diss advertisers' products when they deserved it.
Dirt Rag was good too. Until about 5 years ago with the current editor. Gloss and love for advertisers.
This was about the same time NPR also sold their soul for the almighty dollar.

WTF is wrong with us?

Keep in mind the typical corpse passes this test with flying colors. Stiff as a board but you can push it over with your baby finger.

(I may never be able to hear those words again.)

They only need to print six issues and change the covers on a semi-annual basis, the content never varies.

oh, and change the title to 'Bicycling for Beginners'
Truth-in-advertising and all that.

30 years ago I just could not learn enough fast enough so I read bicycling as 1 of my monthly reads. After about a year or two you see they just recycle their articles by new authors or small twists. Essentially they are for beginners and after a year or two we move on to Cycling news.

Good summary. You stated it better than I did.

I remember thinking that magazine was lame when I was a snobby 15 year old racer in the early/mid '80s, and the cover had someone in work out clothes riding a (real) Masi with sneakers.

Another waste of paper and ink, just like Rolling Stone.
