I'm still here. Had a scare while this was out. Went back east to be with family. Good to come back and see it up again.

Just to keep this thread going:
cyclingnews has a nice piece about Talansky moving directly from pro road cycling to ironman distance tri, and off to a good start. Was smokey52 our forum triguy? I'd like to hear his thoughts and buzz from the tri world.
Seems to me that coming from a running or swimming background would allow for an easier transition than cycling, at least at the shorter Olympic distance. John Howard basically said that back in his day.

I check this place at least daily... probably should contribute more if I expect it to be around and viable.

Guess like most of my cycling I'm just a wheel sucker benefiting from the efforts of others without actually sticking my nose into the wind

Smokey? Ummmm....no.
Talansky to tri is interesting....lord knos plenty of pro cyclists have transitioned over near the end of their careers, but he is still in his prime and has many years of potential ahead of him for long-course tri,
he will never be successful at anything shorter than a 70.3 ironman (Half-Ironman). The swim is too critical for those races....if you can't come out of the water within 10" of the leaders, your race is over since it is draft-legal.....and those guys swim FAST!!
I think he is even underestimating the importance of the swim for a full Ironman, as well....at least in terms of Kona. Even though the race is "no drafting", you get a pretty big lead group rolling up the road in Kona, with everyone keeping at "draft legal" distance (12 meters). There is still a draft at those lengths....so if you don't come out of the water close to the leaders in Kona, you have to burn matches to catch on (see Lionel Sanders and Sebastian Kienle this year in Kona). His "I have swum all my life while surfing" theory is gonna come up woefully short, I think.
Now in other IM races, he can likely do well and potentially even win a few.....but the talent pool in those races is pretty shallow...rarely do you get the big boys going head-to-head during the season. So it becomes much more of an individual event and that plays to his bike strength.
HIs approach to running is smart....he knows he has the aerobic energy to run faster, but needs to take it slow for quite awhile so his muscles, tendons and joints can adapt to the pounding of running. Too many cyclists come into the sport running *too fast* because they have the aerobic ability but the physical endurance to run that fast. I speak from personal experience here....it literall took me years to learn to run *slow*.
I would doubt he can qualify for Kona next year.....IMO, he should set his sights on a late-season IM race that he can target to do well and then repeat again later in the year (October or November) to bank points for Kona 2019 early.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!
