Is there a cycling specific term for the latest, best, most promising cyclist du jour - possibly somewhat derogatory, but not necessarily. I feel like Golden Boy might be overused, but I can't think of a better alternative. It's for a story I'm working on.

LOL! The next (Lance, Eddy, whomever). Sorry I can’t think of another term.

Thanks, Dale. I thought of those also, but I only found "The next Lance" derogatory, not Eddy ; )

And sadly, or not so sadly, Lance is dated.

Needs to be something that the average Joe will understand, and I'm not sure how many people these days would get the Lance reference.

It’s properly spelled Evenepoel. Never heard of Golden Boy.

OC, it looks like Eddy Merckx might have hacked your account.

Perhaps instead of a specific term you might go with something like “just one more in a long list of sub-par heir apparents” Although that sounds a bit formulaic and trite but you get the gist of it.

Expecting the average Joe to get the insider lingo of cyclings bizarre idioms might be problematic.

How about using the phrase in your original post, but drop the French: "most promising cyclist today" ?

The rider in question is very good - just a young, egotistical, pampered dick... A 21 year old narcissistic Lance mixed with a bit of David Millar's fashionista fetish.

Golden Boy is a Japanese porn star is what the internet tells me. Eddy would approve.

OC...

Just Google: Cycling's Golden Boy

Plenty of results showing the overuse of the term.

Ok when I google that it mostly seems to be overused in British tabloids (that for the most part don’t know anything about cycling but maybe that’s the point, explaining cycling to an unappreciative audience). It’s also not a very cycling specific term. I mean Bill Gates is listed as a golden boy. Just a generic term borrowed for cycling.

In Dutch I first arrived at Goudhaantje which translates as Goldcrest (the tiny bird) but again pretty generic and not cycling specifically.

The one that struck home as cycling specific is “Klepper “. Hadn’t come across that in ages but it means someone who’s a much better cyclist than most. It would translate as “Cracker” as in he’s a hell of a cracker (success, bestseller, hit). As a case in point there’s a ton of bike clubs calling themselves De Kleppers.

Klepper to a native English speaker sounds like a social disease. . . In the US, Cracker is a well worn term for a white bubba racist. . Remco is a klepper cracker? He needs antibiotics and sensitivity training. .. . The ambiguity of the English language is a wonderful gift (thank you Shakespeare) and a burden/ potential minefield frequently monitored by the self appointed social police.

A diseased racist versus someone you’d expect to encounter glued to the dance pole at a stripper joint.

Such is the public relations glamour of pro cycling. Guess this is what happens when you wear Lycra. (Your expected pronunciation of Klepper is off by a significant degree though LSD).
