Jens is one of the most obvious dopers of the last 10 years. He has some how avoided the doper tag though. He gives the same answers as Horner and his fans take it and cheer (even though they bash CH).
I'm bringing the Jens thread from elsewhere to the dark side where it belongs. |

I'm with you on that sentiment. Got to question how a rider with poor handling skills can still be riding hard. A likable personality to be sure and probably one of those athletes that is a decent guy. Thing is I like the guy, but I dislike the adulation he gets from fans. |

Yeah, he is a hot mess of a bike handler. Wow. |

Very easy to understand the adulation, you stated it yourself," A likable personality to be sure and probably one of those athletes that is a decent guy. Plus a tireless worker for a team that gives his all with humility. Few in the pro ranks with celebrity exhibit those traits.

i dunno. maybe in the long-ago past of the East German olympic machine most certainly. but now? too much to lose. why is he riding now? because he loves it. doesn't need to prove anything. |

"i dunno. maybe in the long-ago past of the East German olympic machine most certainly." Riddle me this then: for years he would sit on the front and pull a doped up field day in and day out for hours and then drop all but the elite climbers on the first real climb. After we talk about the tip of the iceberg we can look further. My dislike isn't about his doping. its about the fact that he has not only been given a pass by many but he is held up as some type of hero. My dislike is because others that have admitted to doping are hated while Jens keeps quiet and plays sergeant Schulz and people love him. I don't respect dopers and I certainly don't respect lying dopers. |

I don't know the true story, but it is certainly in the realm of possibility he is truly top tier and he was only second tier because of the massive dopers and now his true talent is showing. I had the experience of seeing many young swimmers who went right to the top once they started. there was no long, drawn out ascent. Start swimming, two years later winning nationals and on to the olympics. It is a definite possibility. |

Sorry c2k - I am not buying that. He spent years rolling on the front - or off of it - in the tour day after day. Flats or mtns. And now is doing so at the age of 40. And this is against 20 somethings. As mush as I want to believe that at 40 I could, if I trained enough, be as fast as I was at 25, I know there is no way I could be. |

I think most pros come to the end of their careers long before their bodies quit. The first thing for most I think is their nerve then their passion. A lot retire and quit the bike too but some stay a long time. We all know guys in their 70s are still able to keep up in fast group rides. A local ultra marathon rider rode 70- hours for his 70th birthday and I heard he maintained an average speed above 25kph. I have 60 year old friends that still make the youngsters hurt.
Yes they lose their snap but not their capacity for hard work and they lose their strength a lot slower than credited to Jens. Guys like him are rare but they are real enough for me to believe in at least on this team. |

I'll riddle you that, jmdirt, you could be right. it's probably naive but i just want there to be one good guy left to cheer on and Jens fits. |
