Spring break - Haleakala Crater - 35 mile climb without any proper climbing training should be interesting. Lined up a Cannondale Supersix; haven't ridden one of those yet.

Then on to Flanders and Paris Roubaix, watch races and ride the course on day before. Given that there's no proper cobbles around here we'll have to wing it. Riding 250k in April will also be a new one. Winter distance training will be epic.

That'll also be the end of riding season...for summer I am lining up some killer alpine hikes in the Canadian Rockies for a 3week family camping trip.

2016 should be good...now just gotta get through this stupid winter which hasn't even started yet. Commuting in freezing temps this week. Argghh.

Nice! I rode Haleaka about 20 year ago. Epic climb, you'd have fun.

I'm too damn old to fight the cold anymore and have fully embraced indoor training. Local shop has 16 Computrainers and it is just so much easier / enjoyable to do a simulated course ride with buddies vs. slogging it out in the cold and fighting the snow / ice.

If I didn't have that option, I would seriously consider buying a "smart" trainer and subscribing to TrainerRoad (and Netflix!).

2016 is all about a return trip to Madison for me, followed by the Chicago Marathon a month later. Need to keep my motivation in check for the next 6 months or so. Loooooonnnng way to go....I was fried with one month to go before Madison last year. Don't want to repeat that....

CK - funny I am still affected by my time as competitive swimmer which ended some 34yrs ago at age 16; I hate training indoors. Need to feel that wind even it its brutal wet or cold. And no way am I ever swimming in a pool again.

Yeah, I almost burned myself out before Haute Route this year. About a month and a half before I had to switch things up, away from brutal hillclimb repeats, which were mindnumbingly boring.

By the time I am done these rides it will have been an awesome 50th anniversary cycling year. Which was the objective all along.

CK? Too Old? Seriously?  Well....you do live in Chicago, my winters here in S.F. NM are much different, still cold, but we have a nice warm sun every.
The new trainers are very nice, they make a huge difference I hear. I'm like OC, I need to feel the wind for sure, even when the temps are in the single digits. It takes a sick individual to wanna gear up and head out. 20 degrees this morning, rode for almost two hours.

I hammered it last winter and spring, on the fat bike, MTB's and Cross bikes, by the time summer rolled around, I was severely fried, ready to sell everything, then finally found my mojo again around late Sept

Very Cool OC, sounds epic, you have had some great rides recently!! I'm jealous!

In the latest news for 2016, the UCI has approved use of disc brakes all across the peleton

I paid for that outdoor riding on Friday. In hindsight, it was a pretty funny. Left mid-morning to allow the frost on roads to thaw. 99% was perfect except that one roundabout. At the far end I could see an Audi sitting perpendicular to and in middle of road but somehow the obvious didn't register. Next, swoosh and involuntary contact with the ice/tarmac. That woke me up. Bit of a painful left side of chest but nothing broken. The bike is also fine. Rode the remaining 50k without any further problems. Could have been a lot worse.

I never slide out on the ice when I am on the trainer.....jus' sayin'.

Knocked out just shy of 2 hours yesterday....watched the last 2 1/4 of the last 3 episodes og "Justified", Season 4. When you are just chugging along @ 75% effort and have a some good viewing entertainment, it really ain't that bad.

Now, if I was just in my basement by myself, I would probably sing a different tune.....but hanging with a bunch of other idiots doing the same thing helps motivate me to get there and do the rides.

Luckily for me, I have milk with my cereal in the AM, so I get plenty of Vitamon D.

+1 for hating riding indoors. I tried last winter in the garage, with nothing to entertains me. I found I rode too hard, simply to make it interesting, and wiped myself out quickly. I need trainerroad, or a TV, or anything.

This morning was my first ride this year with icicles from my facial hair. It was a beautiful day, if a bit cool to start.

Ouch..........yup, there is that element, glad you were OK. two years ago on new years day, I'm out on snowy roads on a CX bike for about two hours, a gust of wind hits me, I slide like ten feet sideways, never went down, grabbed my cell phone, had the wife pick me up, really had no idea how slick it was until that happened

Indoor Group Rides!! Exactly!! Did a few roller sessions with a few guys at the bike shop I worked at, they had a great open showroom, it was much enjoyable, had a tour stage on the big screen with, it was not that bad
But, yeah, by yourself, ugh.......

the northern classics sounds like a blast. I bet you will run into some Haute Route veterans.

I'm kicking around the idea of racing this:

I wouldn't be one of those "half-hour naps at a time" guys though.

Yeah, thanks for the encouragment OC. My problem is I am good at finding vacations that satisfy me but not so good at finding vacations that work the whole family and don't leave me clawing my eyeballs out at the lack of adventure. We'll see. I'm also not sure yet if bike touring and racing go together for me. I like both and might have to try this to know for sure. Other options I've been kicking around are tours in BC, along the coast or in the mtns. Or a long backpack in the North Cascades or in Colorado. Lots to choose from. This tour in oregon almost fits the time and money budget perfectly.
