Long story short....had calf cramps (both legs) in the swim and ended up battling them all day. Not a huge deal on the bike (and I had a great bike.....21mph on 162w avg power. Physics....it is not just for breakfast anymore!) but came up and kicked me in the ass on the run.

Felt OK for the first 16 miles, but they seized up as I ran / walked up a small ramp leaving UW football stadium. Both at the same time....i almost dropped to my knees. MIles 17-19 were agony...didn't know if I would finish. But they loosened up enough for to walk faster and get to the line. Everytime I tried to run, there was just too much pain.....

Pretty disappointed...I had a tough swim, great bike and pretty big collapse on the run. My power was good and I did not overbike. Dunno....gonna have to figure out this IM puzzle or just leave it unfinished.

Had I hit my 9:00 / mile goal run pace, I would probably be looking at making travel reservations for next October in Hawaii.......fook me.

quite the frustration! I guess now you have to look at October 2018.
My neighbor runs several marathons each year. This last spring he started cramping a lot. Blood work showed very low potassium. He added potassium supplements, and the cramps stopped.

CK - that sucks but good effort regardless. My first inclination is to point to day prior where you did absolutely nothing. The calf cramps sound awfully familiar. I had a whole bunch bunch of cramping problems like that last year immediately after Haute Route when I did nothing for couple weeks. It may be contrast between the training/effort and the downtime.

It could also be water temperature?

Anyways, sounds like swimming/running was challenged but cycling was great. There's a pretty clear message here if you want to hear it :-)

You may not be happy with your run, but you were still 25th in your division, in the run. I think that is pretty impressive considering the cramps.

I'd like to point out that your bike time was 3rd in your division, of people who finished.

Yeah, the tough thing for me right now (besides the bitter disappointment) is that I am left with a bunch of unawered questions....the biggest being "Why the hell did I cramp during the swim?" Two years ago, I knew what I did wrong...I ran too fast and blew up. Right, I can fix that.

This year? Fook, I dunno....I don;t know the cause so I don't know how to fix it. Definitely wasn't the water temp...low 70's and felt great. Was dehydration because it was the beginning of the swim (and I was well hydrated based on the amount of times I peed in my wetsuit and on the bike). Was on top of my nutrition all day on the bike....and the cramps were already well in place before then anyway.

I just need to put some time between me and the event and then reflect back....right now, it still stings a bit, ya know?

bummer, CK. I'd have thought cramps would be solved and only things we told our grandchildren about. I wonder if those spicy shot things really work for cramps. might be hard to force down though.

Smashed it on the bike though and that is all that matters for cred here.
