Most of the BRP is smooth but there are some pretty rough frost heaves around mt Mitchell. 40 miles of very rough chip seal was recently applied south of Roanoke. Even with the intermittent winter road closures the asphalt still degrades over time. They are usually repaving some part of it at any one time. Hate that chip seal.

6ix, I hear a real need for a triple! That's exactly where they rule. They allow you to do rides and make them fun.
I've set up all my bikes with variations of 53-42-28 ever since my last race, 1978. I used to ride up and over Oakland's Skyline Blvd to Mt Diablo and back. I did set up a race frame with a 52-39. Rode from Portland over the Chehalem hills and on impulse took the shortcut up Laurelwood. (Several stretches @ probably 15%+.) The triple went on the next day.
A trick I have used several times for rides with hard climbs that are the "feature" of the ride but that have hard climbs leading up to it - I ride with a HR monitor and limit my HR a lot for the early climbs. 10 years ago (my mid-fifties) I rode a 100 miler climbing Lolo Pass on the Oregon Trail. For the early climbs, I stayed under a HR of 155. The triple made that easy to do. Went up Lolo at 164, felt great and dropped a racer 10 years younger. (The triple also has the advantage that you have more choices in the low gear range so you can fine tune your gearing to ride a HR.)
