I’m curious what you all use for sunscreen and am specifically looking for something that doesn’t completely block perspiration.
When I use sunblock on days I’ll know I’ll be exposed for extended periods, I do not sweat much and my body overheats and my hr is elevated. Yesterday I rode with no sunblock late in the day, and my hr was back to normal and I was able to easily push hard when I wanted.
My go to sunblock for years has been No-Ad but I’m willing to try anything.
Thanks in advance for your advice,
Hab/Dave |

I usually just use Coppertone Sport 30spf. I also use the spray vs. a lotion....just easier to put on and less mess (but more$$). I've never noticed any adverse effects re: sweating / HR...... |

Coppertone Sport 30 or 50 whichever I happen to grab at the store. Sometimes my wife slaps some of her fancy stuff on me but left to my own it's the Sport. Most of the time I don't use any unless I'm out in the boat where I risk getting my non-cycling exposed parts toasted. |

That's what I normally do, but the wife and kids have been on a kick to get slathered up anytime they head outside. With my complexion I do not burn so maybe I'll stay away from the stuff or try some of the spray on stuff.
It definitely was impacting my performance on the order of 10-15%. |

If I'm out for a long day on the bike I'll use some on my face. My arms and legs can fend for themselves. |

I'm usually the opposite...my face gets pretty well protected from my lid / glasses, but I'll throw stuff on my exposed areas (arms, legs, back of neck, etc).
All that said, I need to make an appt with a dermatologist...all my buddies are getting stuff removed. Need to just do a safety check... |

For local rides I mostly don't use anything. This is Vancouver, we need all the vitamin D we can absorb. Also there's a natural season gradation in terms of exposure and with our year-round riding. By the time summer hits I am usually well tanned. |

I've been using Banana Boat 50 spf for years except around and above my eyes. There I use Aloe Gator 40 spf gel because it does not run at all and is very gentle in the eyes. I in fact smear it liberally over my closed eyelids. Dale, my arms have seen way too much sun over the years. I use as much there as on my face and the back of my neck. (Too much sailing with both the water and sails reflecting the UV.) I don't notice a big difference sunscreen to no sunscreen except I do notice feeling drained if I have seen too much sun without the stuff. i seem to sweat pretty normally with the Banana Boat though I have never sweated visibly a whole lot. ('77 States, I did start at probably a well watered 147 lbs, drank 2 WBs - no feed arranged - a ton of water at the finish, watermelon and root beer on the way home, stepped on the scale. 141 lbs.) Interesting that you bring up sweating. Last night at the Tuesday nighter I noted after the race some of the guys looked like they were leaking. Big pools of sweat running off their elbows as they leaned on their bikes. Me? I was wet but nothing running off. Upper 80's in both temp and humidity. |

I had neve even considered the possibility of sunscreen interfering with effective sweating....it appears as though it could be a real thing, at least for some products. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5139786/ Conclusions: The inorganic physical sun block, sunscreen B, hindered effective sweating to the same extent as the antiperspirant, whereas the treatment with the organic chemical sun filter, sunscreen A, was not different from the control treatment. At this stage, it is not possible to identify the specific ingredient responsible for the effect. The issue may be related to water-resistant sunscreen, which would make sense....it is designed to withstand water, so sweating could be inhibited where applied. |

That would be me using sunscreen. Not much sweat, but when I don't use it I sweat quite a bit. |

Very interesting. Seems like I need to experiment a bit with sunblock brands. |

Apply way before going into the sun, it will last longer. |

I burn on my face like nobody's business. I use SPF 70 to 100 and still burn. Sweating is no problem since 90% of my body isn't covered in sunscreen. My legs and arms fare okay without it for some reason. |

Used some Sport Spray water resistant (80 min) sunscreen spray last week (Target). It was hot (90's) but not HOT HOT like we usually get here in the foothills. I bonked badly. I think it prevented me from sweating. I had a hard time just making it home. I think I experienced heat exhaustion. I drank two Polar 25oz bottles on the ride. Water was not the issue.Too tired to ride the next day. Most of the sunscreen is good for about two hours. Right now I am trying to ride in the shade as much as possible, even if it means going back and forth over the same route a couple of times. Too much sun is not good. One problem is we had no spring here this year. Winter right into summer. It takes a few weeks to acclimate to the heat. Riding early in the morning would be the problem solver. But traffic in the morning is heavy and not real safe, unless it is the weekend. The sun is not our friend. |
