2009 Specialized BG S-Works Road Shoe
I used to have big problems with my feet going to sleep or getting hot spots on long rides. This is all in the past thanks to Specialized and their 2009 S-Works Shoe.
Specialized has been making quite a name for themselves with their Body Geometry (BG) lines of clothing and components, and the new BG S-Works Road Shoe is no different.
Most notably is their line of BG foot beds and shims. Every BG S-Works Shoe has one shim integrated in every shoe, with the option to add additional shims with one of three choices of foot-beds, providing alignment and support in the most important areas.
The BG S-Works Shoe is lightweight. Specialized claims, "the lightest production road shoe with a mechanical closure." I have picked up some of the Mavic shoes, which definitely feel lighter, but with a strap system instead of the BOA Closure system, I much prefer the fit of the S-Works shoe when compared to the minimal weight savings.
The BOA Closure system easily allows you to adjust the tightness of your shoes, with precision. I wear a size 43.5 EU (10.5). I had to use a shoehorn to get my shoes on because the limits of the lace were barely enough to allow my extremely high arches in the shoe. Since, I discovered releasing the lace from the hook, located next to the BOA dial, allows for an unlimited amount of room for my foot to get in and out before re-hooking the lace. The process may take an extra ten seconds but is well worth it when compared to snapping one of the laces.
I noticed the BOA lacing system really only applies to the upper range of your feet. Tensioning the lower third is still accomplished by a Velcro strap, which, as the case with any strap closure system, will eventually wear out, fill with lint, and not be very effective.
I was surprised with the amount of room in the toe-box. I have wide feet and Specialized has the option of purchasing Wide (EE) sizes, but I found the standard width more than adequate, even after my feet swell from riding.
You’ll notice the breath ability of the shoe, both when riding and when looking at the see through mesh panels along the side of the shoes and tongue.
The 2010 version has been completely re-designed to address the basic complaints, however trivial, of the 2009 version. Additional weight savings, dual dials for the upper and middle section control, fine-tuning adjustability within the BOA lacing system, and a replaceable monofilament lace.
All in all, whether the 2009 or 2010 version, The Specialized BG S-Works Road Shoe will not disappoint.
