The highly unusual weather conditions which hit Majorca this week have put paid to the running of the fourth and last race in the Challenge Mallorca series, the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana.
The 160.2 kilometre race was due to go over five climbs, including the first category Puig Major, but a fall of snow led to complications.
Organisers were unable to find an alternative route to use and so the decision has been taken to scrap today’s event.
Mallorca generally enjoys mild weather at this time of year and is often used by teams for training prior to the Challenge Mallorca races. The 1.1 events are used by many riders to begin their seasons, and this year saw Tour de France winner Cadel Evans plus the Schleck brothers Andy and Frank start their 2012 racing campaigns.
The cold spell which has hit Europe has complicated things for the Mallorca events and also last week’s Etoile de Besseges.
Andy Fenn (Omega Pharma Quick Step, pictured) won the first two races, the Trofeo Palma and the Trofeo Migjorn, while Lars Petter Nordhaug (Sky Procycling) took yesterday’s Trofeo Deia.
