It was expected to be a showdown between Jose Rujano and Tom Danielson (Garmin Barricuda) but, in the end, Rujano’s Androni Giocattoli – Venezuela team-mate Jose Serpa was man of the moment on the ferocious climb of Genting Highlands.
Serpa won yesterday’s stage, then made it back-to-back victories today when he powered away from Victor Nino Corridor (Azad University Cross) in the final 200 metres.
The 32 year old Colombian beat his 38 year old compatriot by two seconds, with Rujano finishing 46 seconds back in third. Alexandr Dyachenko (Astana) and Jackson Rodriguez (Androni Giocattoli – Venezuela) completed the top five.
The climb to the casinos had a clear effect on the general classification, with the riders in first (Darren Lapthorne) and second (Danielson) overall both struggling on the climb. They finished 59th and 74th respectively, with the American telling VeloNation afterwards that his crash on stage three to Parit Sulong had taken more out of him than he had thought.
In contrast, Serpa’s dominance and Rujano’s solid ride saw them end the day first and second overall in the overall standings, thirty seconds apart, with Nino Corridor a further 26 seconds back in third.
Dyachenko and Rodriguez are fourth and fifth.
The race continues with four flatter stages, where this year’s triple stage winner Andrea Guardini (Farnese Vini – Selle Italia) is expected to add to his tally. Serpa is likely to come under attack, although it will be a difficult task for any of his rivals to get back into the frame.
