Danish rider joins Canada’s only professional team after being released by Saxo Bank last year
Spidertech powered by C10 has added the WorldTour experience of Brian Vandborg to its roster, the team announced today. The 30-year-old Danish rider has been a professional since 2004, but was not offered an extension to his one-year contract with the Saxo Bank team at the end of 2011 and has been without a team so far this year.
“I’m definitely excited about joining the team,” said Vandborg. “It’s still a pretty new project. Obviously the number one Canadian team and it’s still growing. I know the goals of the team and I really want to be part of that.”
On signing with the team, Vandborg will be joining close friend Lucas Euser, who has been with Spidertech since 2010.
“Racing with Lucas, I’m really looking forward to that,” Vandborg said. ‘I just want to start racing.”
In particular, the Danish rider is looking forward to the Amgen Tour of California, in which he finished 19th overall in 2011, despite working for Saxo Bank’s sprinter Juan Jose Haedo in the first few stages. He also rode the Tour de France last year - as he had done in the previous two seasons when he was riding for Liquigas - in support of Alberto Contador’s unsuccessful campaign.
In addition to the Tour, Vandborg has ridden the Giro d’Italia twice and the Vuelta a España once, in his previous stint with Team CSC and his year with Discovery Channel. His most notable result to date has been his victory in the Danish national time trial championships in 2006.
“The arrival of Vandborg within our ranks will help to fill an important sporting gap for Team SpiderTech,” said Steve Bauer, Team SpiderTech co-founder and directeur sportif. “He’s a strong all-rounder, with deep time trial abilities. He will certainly add depth and strength to pilot the team through hardest races, and will serve as a captain for our young team, bringing his extensive experience."
