Continuing his resurgence in form in yesterday’s Gent-Wevelgem, Belgian rider Tom Boonen continues his rise up the UCI’s WorldTour rankings thanks to his latest victory. The Omega Pharma Quick Step competitor has gone from seventh to fourth and, if he can keep his momentum going in the upcoming Ronde Van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix, should continue moving towards the coveted number one slot.
At this point in time, that prime position remains the property of GreenEdge rider Simon Gerrans. He didn’t compete in either the Volta a Catalunya nor Gent-Wevelgem but, with 210 points, had enough of a buffer to hold onto his world ranking place.
Ditto for Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas Cannondale) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), who remain second and third despite not picking up points in the past week.
Boonen is just one point off Valverde’s total of 167.
Oscar Freire hoped to take revenge on Boonen after a near-miss in Friday’s E3 Harelbeke, but mistimed his sprint again yesterday. This time he went too early and his fourth place in Gent-Wevelgem sees him remain fifth overall.
Peter Sagan (Liquigas Cannondale) and Michael Albasini (GreenEdge) both break into the top ten; Sagan’s runner up slot yesterday up his total to 129 points and move him from twelfth to sixth, while Albasini’s Volta a Catalunya victory plus two stage wins sees him enter the WorldTour rankings with 129 points.
Olympic champion Samuel Sanchez’ stage win and second overall in the same race sees him take tenth with 88 points.
The movements displace several riders. Paris-Nice victor and runner up Bradley Wiggins (Sky Procycling) and Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil DCM) drop from fourth to eight and sixth to ninth respectively; Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack), his team-mate Chris Horner and Roman Kreuziger (Astana) also exit the top ten in drifting to 11th, 12th and 13th respectively.
New entrants to the rankings also include Jurgen Van den Broeck (Lotto Belisol, 15th), Rigoberto Uran (Sky Procycling, 17th), Dan Martin (Garmin Barracuda, 21st), Matti Breschel (Rabobank, 24th) and Damiano Cunego (Lampre ISD, 27th).
Countries and teams:
The countries and teams rankings are also reshuffled under the latest points update. Spain and Italy remain first and second in the countries’ list, but Belgium and Australia swop places and are now third and fourth. Albasini’s win moves Switzerland from eighth to fifth, knocking the Netherlands down a place to sixth.
RadioShack-Nissan loses its place in the teams’ list, dropping from first to fourth. Sky Procycling and GreenEdge move to first and second, with Liquigas Cannondale remaining third.
