Belgian’s Omega Pharma Quick Step team also seeing benefits of Roubaix win

Tom BoonenTom Boonen has reinforced his position at the top of the UCI’s WorldTour rankings thanks to his second consecutive victory at that level, yesterday’s Paris-Roubaix.

Previously 56 points ahead of closest challenger Simon Gerrans (GreenEdge), the Belgian has now increased his points total by an additional 100 points, thus increasing the size of the task the Australian faces if he is to get back on terms.

Vuelta al Pais Vasco winner Samuel Sanchez, who moved from eleventh to third as a result of that win on Saturday, remains third after the points for Paris-Roubaix were factored into the overall standings.

The Euskaltel Euskadi rider is just two points behind Gerrans, and is 26 in front of Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale). Peter Sagan (also Liquigas-Cannondale) is a further 29 seconds back in fifth.

Yesterday’s runner-up Sebastien Turgot doesn’t get any WorldTour points as his Europcar team is racing with a Pro Continental licence. The rider he narrowly beat for second place, Alessandro Ballan (BMC Racing Team) moves into the top ten as a result of that performance. The Italian jumps from thirteenth to seventh, knocking Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) – who had previously progressed from 28th to seventh due to his Vuelta al Pais Vasco runner-up slot – down a place.

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar, 6th), Oscar Freire (Katusha, 9th) and Michael Albasini (GreenEdge, 10th) are the other riders in the top ten.

Teams and nations:

Unsurprisingly, Boonen’s victory consolidates his Omega Pharma Quick Step squad’s position at the head of the team rankings. It is now on 547 points, far better than Katusha (382), Liquigas Cannondale (375), Sky Procycling (366) and GreenEdge (342).

In fact, the rankings of each of the teams in the top ten remain unchanged, as regards their position in the standings.

The nations’ list is also relatively constant. Spain continues to lead on 717 points, Belgium goes from third to second with 567, while Italy is now one point behind in third.

The only other position change in the top ten is the switch in placings between Netherlands and Australia, which are now fourth and fifth.

The next WorldTour event is Sunday’s Amstel Gold Race, which will give Boonen further opportunity to add to his total.

At the same time, the Dutch event does however mark the start of the Ardennes Classics, where riders like Gerrans, Valverde, Sanchez and others will push for big results and could start narrowing the gap.
