After limping onto the stage to receive another Maglia Rosa as race leader, then boarding a plane to fly to Italia, Taylor Phinney underwent x-rays at a hospital in Verona this evening in order to ascertain the full nature of the injuries he suffered in the finishing crash.
The BMC Racing Team rider was the most badly hurt of those who came down inside the final 500 metres, the accident being a result of some wild sprinting by the Italian Roberto Ferrari (Androni Giocattoli – Venezuela).
Fortunately the medical examination appears to have ruled out fractures, according to BMC Racing Team Doctor Dario Spinelli.
He said that Phinney will be monitored to see how he is recovering. However things appear to be looking good for him to continue in the race.
"We'll take another look at his ankle later today and see how it's healing," Spinelli said. "It's definitely good that this happened before a rest day, since the transport and treatment process took so long. Taylor will enjoy a good night of sleep without the stress of having to get ready to race."
The 21 year old American was given three stitches to close a wound to his right ankle. He holds a nine second lead over Sky’s Geraint Thomas at the top of the general classification.
After tomorrow’s rest day, the race will continue Wednesday with the team time trial in Verona.
