After some concerns about whether the race would take place in 2013, it has been confirmed that the Volta ao Algarve will indeed be held but will be reduced in duration because of financial difficulties.
The current tough economic situation in Portugal has led to the decision to shorten the early-season race, which will drop from five to four stages in 2013.
“We live in a period of uncertainty, driven by the deep crisis the country is experiencing, but it was possible to find a solution so that the race takes place,” stated the president of the Cycling Association of the Algarve in a statement.
The 2013 edition of the race will begin on February 14th and run until February 17th.
Spanish website Biciclismo recently reported that Tour winner Bradley Wiggins may elect to begin his 2013 season at the 2.1-ranked event. His team-mate Chris Froome, Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma Quick Step) and Andre Greipel (Lotto Belisol) are also pencilled in.
It remains to be seen if defending champion Richie Porte will also be part of Team Sky’s selection there.
