Sagan maintains lead in UCI WorldTour standings, Cancellara narrows gap

No actual reshuffling of top twelve riders, but teams and nations change positions

UCI WorldTourRonde van Vlaanderen runner-up Peter Sagan has retained his place atop the standings of the UCI WorldTour, although yesterday’s Classic winner Fabian Cancellara has closed the gap by twenty points as a result of his win.

Cancellara broke away from Sagan on the last climb of the race and soloed in for his second Ronde success. The victory saw his tally increase to 251 points, 61 less than Sagan’s total of 312. Cancellara can take over at the top next weekend with a strong performance in Paris-Roubaix, although the Slovakian has said that he will target the Amstel Gold Race and possibly also Flèche Wallonne after that.

This gives him a platform to retake the lead if he is indeed deposed.

Yesterday’s race actually had little effect on the actual position of riders, with every one of those in the top twelve remaining in the same slot as before. Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), Sylvain Chavanel (Omega Pharma Quick Step), Geraint Thomas (Sky Procycling) and his team-mate Riche Porte continue to fill the top six, while Tom Jelte Slagter (Blanco), Dan Martin (Garmin-Sharp), Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) and Andrew Talansky (Garmin Sharp) complete the top ten.

The only riders breaking into the top fifteen as a result of yesterday’s race are Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team), who finished seventh in Flanders and went from 24th to 13th, and fourth-placed Alexander Kirstoff (Katusha), who jumps from 41st to 14th.

They bump Alberto Contador (Saxo Tinkoff) down two places to fifteenth.

The race had a bigger effect on the team rankings, with Cancellara’s success moving RadioShack Leopard up one place to second, and Sagan raising Cannondale one slot to fourth. Also on the rise are the BMC Racing Team. Sky remains number one on 407 points, 41 ahead of RadioShack Leopard.

Spain and Italy continue to lead the nations’ ranking, while Sagan’s runner-up slot elevates Slovakia from sixth to third. Switzerland also goes up, moving from eighth to sixth courtesy of the race winner.

The complete standings are as follows:
