Stage winner in the race two years ago, Angel Vicioso’s campaign this year has ended on a less successful note with the Spaniard indicating today he would not continue in the event.
The 36 year old crashed badly yesterday, hitting the deck on a descent near the finish. While he finished the stage, rolling in 177th at 17 minutes 45 seconds, he was badly hurt. Any thoughts of using the rest day to recover were ruled out when medical evaluations showed the extent of his injuries.
Vicioso has broken three ribs plus his wrist. He also suffered shoulder injuries, including a fractured scapula. He will undergo a more complete medical examination this week, after which his Katusha team will have a clearer picture about when he can return to training and then racing.
The Spaniard had shown good former earlier in the Giro, netting second behind John Degenkolb on the fifth stage to Matera.
