Be Pink takes morning team time trial

evie stevensEvie Stevens (Specialized-lululemon) was in a commanding lead at the end of the first day of the 2013 Giro del Trentino Donne, after a solo victory on the mountaintop finish of Termon in the afternoon’s semitappa. The American led the MCipollini-Giordana duo of 2009 World champion Tatiana Guderzo and former Russian champion Tatiana Antoshina by 46 seconds and one minute 15 seconds respectively, with only the tough San Romedio to Sarnonico second stage to come.

Team Be Pink took victory in the morning’s team time trial, between Revò and Lauregno with Dalia Muccioli, Georgia Williams and Doris Schweizer completing the uphill 11.5km to the 1136 metre high finish in 26 minutes 19 seconds. The Italian team finished 13 seconds quicker than the battle for second place, between the Specialized-lululemon team of Trixi Worrack, Stevens, and Lisa Brennauer and the MCipollini-Giordana team of Guderzo, Tatiana Antoshina and Sari Saarelainen.

The 88.6km afternoon road stage saw the peloton stay together on the descent from Termon and the Adige valley roads that followed. As the final climb to the finish began with around eight kilometres to go, however, a group of 32 riders moved clear of the rest.

With six kilometres to go Stevens attacked and was followed by Elisa Longo Borghini (Hitec Products) and Guderzo, with Swedish champion Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS) quickly joining the two chasing Italians. With five kilometres to go the American was 25 seconds clear, however, and had extended her lead to 32 seconds as she topped the second category climb with just 2.1km remaining.

Sprinting all the way to the finish Stevens was able to take her time to celebrate her sixth victory of the season, with Johansson outsprinting Longo Borghini and Guderzo some 39 seconds later.

With Muccioli finishing in a group 1’49” back, Stevens took over the pink jersey with a comfortable lead over Guderzo and Antoshina.
