Roche nets fourth but ends day second overall

Vuelta a EspanaAttacking hard inside the wall-like final kilometre of the stage in search of the stage win, the top time bonus and the overall lead, Dani Moreno achieved all three of those on today’s ninth stage of the Vuelta a España.

The Spaniard finished four seconds clear of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Moreno’s Katusha team-mate in Valdepeñas de Jaén, with Roche finishing eight seconds back in fourth.

That saw the red jersey shift to Moreno’s shoulders by just one second, with 2010 race winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) twenty seconds back in third overall.

The 163.7 kilometre stage featured a five man break consisting of Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil DCM), Francisco Javier Aramendia (Caja Rural), Anthony Roux (FDJ), Luke Rowe (Team Sky) and Lloyd Mondory (Ag2r la Mondiale).

These gained a lead of almost seven minutes but were reeled in 26 kilometres from the line. Amets Txurruka (Caja Rural) then jumped clear on the second category climb of Alto de los Frailes and tried to build a decent lead, but was caught and passed by Robert Kiserlovski (RadioShack Leopard).

However Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky) blasted past him, and went over the summit ten seconds ahead of the lone chaser Nicolas Edet (Cofidis), who was reeled in soon after.

The Norwegian pushed hard but was reeled in 1.8 kilometres from the line. Moreno then made his move inside the final kilometre, motoring towards the line and opening enough of a time gap to grab the red jersey from Roche.

“I’m very happy with this victory,” said the Spaniard. “Yesterday I said to my teammates that I would have liked to try to win today because I liked this stage a lot. I have to thank all them, especially Luca Paolini, who helped me a lot in the final part in order to put me in the best position for attacking, and Purito [Rodriguez]. We know each other very well, we know which stages are more suitable to the other.”

Although he is now in the red jersey, he stressed that Rodriguez remains the rider for the overall. “He’s the leader, all in the team work for him, but today I have got a chance to try for myself. We have to be focused every day and take advantage of any chances we would have to reach the team’s aims.

“I think the race is still very long and maybe I’ll have some more chances. It was a great victory in a very demanding stage.”

How it played out:

The 163.7 kilometre stage from Antequera to Valdepeñas de Jaén was another stage ending with an uphill finish, although in contrast to yesterday, the final ramp was a very short, steep one. Previous winners were Igor Anton (Euskaltel Euskadi) and Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), showing that small, explosive riders are well suited to the characteristics of the final climb.

The day’s break started one kilometre after the drop of the flag when former Tour de France King of the Mountains jersey wearer Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil DCM) and Sky’s Luke Rowe slipped clear. They were joined very soon afterwards by Francisco Javier Aramendia (Caja Rural), Anthony Roux (FDJ) and Lloyd Mondory (Ag2r la Mondiale).

They build a maximum lead of six minutes 34 seconds but chasing behind by the BMC Racing Team started to bring that back. It was down to three minutes 58 seconds after fifty kilometres, although the BMC and Katusha teams eased back over the next ten kilometres and allowed the break to increase to five and a half minutes.

After the feed zone, the gap was down to three minutes 43 seconds with 84 kilometres covered. Lotto – Belisol also got involved with the chase behind and when Roux beat Hoogerland and Aramendia to the Castillo de Locubín intermediate sprint (km 116.4, 47.3 kilometres from the finish), the leaders’ advantage was down to one minute 50 seconds.

Mondory edged out Rowe and Armendia for the second intermediate sprint at Alcalá La Real, 36.7 kilometres from the line, where the advantage had fallen to half a minute.

Just before they were caught with approximately 26 kilometres remaining, Aramendia clipped away and pushed ahead. The riders moved onto the day’s second category climb and the lone leader was hauled back, after which Amets Txurruka (Caja Rural) kicked clear.

He was caught with twenty kilometres to go by Robert Kiserlovski (RadioShack Leopard), who built a twelve second lead over the next two kilometres.

Sky’s Edvald Boasson Hagen attacked hard before the summit and tore past Txurruka, holding a ten second lead over the top. He hoped a lead of almost half a minute, prompting Luis Leon Sanchez (Belkin) to attack and try to get across.

Sanchez closed to nine seconds but was reabsorbed by the peloton, which was being led by Katusha. Boasson Hagen held a small ten second lead with nine kilometres to go, and had the same gap going under the four kilometre banner.

He continued to push hard but with a very difficult ramp up to the finish, it was clear that the fresher riders behind had the advantage. The Norwegian’s time out front was limited and he was finally reeled in 1.8 kilometres from the line.

Overall leader Nicolas Roche (Saxo Tinkoff) was close to the front of the reduced-size peloton heading towards the final kilometre. Ivan Basso (Cannondale) jumped hard after the kite and stretched things out, then Dani Moreno (Katusha) attacked hard to try to gain the time needed to take the jersey.

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) went after him, with Roche close behind and chasing hard. The Irishman took fourth but the time bonus for the stage winner Moreno and the gap he opened made things very tight.

Once the calculations were done it was confirmed that Moreno had taken over at the top by one second, with Roche second overall and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) twenty seconds back in third.

Valverde and Chris Horner (RadioShack Leopard) ended the day fourth and fifth overall, with Rodriguez sixth.
