Stagiaire’s victory highlights his potential

Peter SaganSilvan Dillier boosted his chances of transferring his stagiaire slot with the BMC Racing Team into a pro contract when he won stage two of the Tour of Alberta yesterday. The Swiss rider joined up with the Moldovan Serghei Tvetcov (Jelly Belly p/b Kenda) in a two man break, going clear approximately 95 kilometres after the start, and opened up a considerable lead.

The bunch chased hard but left it too late, with the leading duo hitting the line sixteen seconds ahead of overall leader Peter Sagan (Cannondale). Aidis Kruopis (Orica-GreenEdge) and Luka Mezgec (Team Argos-Shimano) led in the main bunch two seconds later.

“I think everybody was a little bit tired after all the attacks. So at first we had a big gap,” Dillier said afterwards. “We tried to save something for the final because we knew they wanted to have the bunch sprint again. Then, the last thirty kilometers were going to be really hard. So we tried to save something to go to the end.”

With ten kilometres to go the duo had a minute and a half lead, giving them a mathematical chance. And while the sprinters’ teams floored it, Dillier and Tvetcov were strong enough to fend them off, disputing the win between them.

Dillier has been racing for the BMC Development team this year and has already clocked up wins in that squad, taking the overall victory in March’s Tour de Normandie, then also winning the Flèche Ardennaise in June.

Sagan bolstered his overall lead with third, adding three seconds to his advantage over closest challenger Rohan Dennis (Garmin-Sharp). He is now 26 seconds clear, with Tobias Ludvigsson (Team Argos-Shimano) third at 28 seconds and Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) 36 seconds back.

“The job of my team was to control the race today,” said Sagan. “It wasn’t as important to win the race [the stage], but to keep the leader’s jersey.

“The first 50 kilometres were something like 55 kph. Everyone was trying to break away. Everyone wants to win.”

The race continues today with a lumpy 170 kilometre race from Strathmore to Drumheller. Harder than the previous two stages, Sagan’s rivals will be trying to find a crack in his defence. However the Slovakian is clearly in great form and will be difficult to beat.
