Family member of Tour de France runner up signs contract with Spanish WorldTour squad

Dayer QuintanaTwo years after Nairo Quintana joined the Movistar team and three months after he finished second in the Tour de France, the brother of the Colombian rider has been confirmed as joining him next season.

Dayer Quintana, who at 21 is two years younger, has inked a deal with the Spanish WorldTour team and will join his future team-mates next week at a get-together in Pamplona.

The younger Quintana brother competed with the amateur Lizarte team this year. Although the rider from Cómbita, Boyacá, didn’t start his season until April, he clocked up a range of high placings, including over twenty top ten finishes in Spanish events.

Like Nairo Quintana, he too shows a particular talent for climbing and his new team will hope that transfers across well to the pro scene.

His elder brother has emerged as arguably the top young talent in the sport, finishing second in his first Tour de France in July.

He also won a stage and took both the mountains and young rider classification. The performance followed on from his stage win and overall victory in the Volta al Pais Vasco, plus his stage win and overall triumph in the Vuelta a Burgos.

In addition to those results, he also took a stage plus fourth overall in the Volta a Catalunya.

His Tour debut echoes that of Jan Ullrich, who was second in his first Tour in 1996, as well as other top names from the past.
