Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Doimo) broke his left collarbone in the fifth stage of the Eneco Tour today, ending his chances for overall victory in the Vuelta later this month, and likely his spot on the Italian team for the world championships in Mendrisio, Switzerland.
Nibali was in an escape with Dane Lars Bak (Saxo Bank) when the crash happened, just 2.5 kilometers from the finish of the 204 kilometer stage. Bak went on to win the stage that ended in Sittard, Holland.
He will fly to Italy to have surgery on the injury.
