Weeks after taking the Australian time trial championships, Michael Hepburn provided further confirmation of his continued evolution in this area when he sped home quickest of several big names in today’s stage of the Tour of Qatar.
The Orica GreenEdge rider started early and posted a time of 13 minutes 29 seconds for the 10.9 kilometre distance; this would prove to be one second quicker than the day’s runner-up Lars Boom (Belkin), and six seconds faster than Daniele Bennati (Tinkoff Saxo) and former world champion Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing).
Overnight race leader Niki Terpstra (Omega Pharma Quick Step) rode strongly to take fifth, eight seconds off the winning time, and moved another step closer towards winning the final overall classification.
Like the other riders, Hepburn was required to use a standard road bike in the test. He said that he had done several specific training sessions recently for the TT, and that he drew motivation from his current status as Australian champion.
“Right from the start, it was a really proud moment to ride in the national colours for the first time. I rode early in the race, so I had to wait awhile to see what my time would get me. Towards the end, when I realised that maybe I would win, the nerves really started to pick up.”
Hepburn said that he had expected that if things went well, that a place in the final top five might have been possible. Instead, he did considerably better than that.
“There are some big names here. I’m pretty stoked to finish on the top,” he enthused.
“I knew exactly what I had to do. I had a clear idea of the power I had to produce, and I was confident I could do that. I’m in good condition for a ten kilometre time trial. A race of this length is similar to the individual pursuit. You just have to be smooth. I wouldn’t say any one thing went right. I just did what I had the confidence that I could do – and it got me the win in the end.”
According to the 22 year old, the most important section of the course were the final three kilometres as they were into a strong headwind. The conditions made it important for him to have some energy in reserve for that, then use it in going as quickly as possible to the line.
Belkin’s Boom was involved in yesterday’s break and attacked heading into the final kilometre, but was caught. He went closer to a stage win today, but finished one slender second back.
He said that he wasn’t agonising about where he could have made up time. “I didn’t put myself under any extra pressure and it worked. I started off well and don’t think I could have gone any faster,” he stated.
Bennati also made it into yesterday’s break, but was unable to fight for the win at the end. He was a fine third today despite being sick in the first days of the race. “I was feeling a bit under the weather the first few days of the race because of a intestinal problem and because of that I gave everything to lead out Michael (Mørkøv) in yesterday's finale. I lost a little time overall on the final kilometre,” he said. “So I really didn’t think I was able to go this fast today. This is perfect for the morale and let’s see what the rest of the race brings.”
Terpstra’s strong ride sees him extend his lead over the second-placed rider Jurgen Roelandts (Lotto Belisol), who was back in twentieth today. He is 21 seconds back now, while Boom has reduced his own deficit slightly to 24 seconds. Terpstra’s team-mate Tom Boonen is fourth, 28 seconds back, and gives the team another option in the days ahead.
So too Guillaume Van Keirsbulck, who is 45 seconds back in sixth overall.
Boom pledges to race flat out for the remainder of the event. “I think it's important to keep an open-mind during this race and just go as deep as possible every day,” he said. “It would be nice if I can keep my third place, though.”
The Tour of Qatar continues tomorrow with a 135 kilometre race from Dukhan to Mesaieed.
