World champion Cadel Evans, former Tour de France yellow jersey Phil Anderson, three-time Tour de France green jersey Robbie McEwen and “The Voice of Cycling” Phil Liggett were among those who got on their bikes in the Amy Gillett Foundation's fundraising ride in Geelong this Sunday, according to SBS-cycling central.
A total of 2,500 riders, with ages ranging from 1 to 75 completed the ride.
Amy Gillett was an Australian rower turned cyclist who was killed when a car lost control and hit the Australian team head on as they trained before the Thüringen Rundfahrt in eastern Germany in July 2005. Teammates Katie Brown, Lorian Graham, Kate Nichols, Alexis Rhodes and Louise Yaxley were injured in the crash, Rhodes and Yaxley seriously. The foundation was set up in her name to promote safety awareness between car drivers and cyclists.
Sunday’s ride reportedly raised over 230,000 Australian Dollars for the Foundation.
