Organizers of the 2010 Tour of the Battenkill have taken the opportunity to use their event to promote health and wellness. The race has teamed up with Glens Falls Hospital to highlight the cancer awareness initiative of the U23 Trek-LIVESTRONG Professional Cycling Team, who will be taking part in the race.
“We are thrilled to welcome the U23 Trek-LIVESTRONG Professional Cycling Team to this event,” says Glens Falls Hospital President and CEO David G. Kruczlnicki. “The C.R. Wood Cancer Center is the region’s only comprehensive, integrated cancer center. Coupled with our health centers in Washington County, Glens Falls Hospital brings the full resources of wellness, prevention, and treatment to the region. Our mission fits perfectly with the U23 Trek-LIVESTRONG team and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.”
Glens Falls Hospital is the region's premier medical center, and recognizes healthy advantages to cycling as well as its effectiveness when used to deliver a message.
The event's festivities will be held over two weekends in Upstate New York's Washington County. The first weekend will feature the Pro/Am race. The Pro/Am event is the largest road race in North America and expects more than 2,000 riders in 25 different categories to compete over the rugged 62 mile course situated in the scenic Battenkill Valley. The next day will be highlighted by a group viewing of the race's inspiration, Paris-Roubaix, at the event's host hotel.
The second weekend will kick off with the Ride2Recovery CycleFest. The program is produced by the Fitness Challenge Foundation (501C3) in partnership with the Military and VA Volunteer Service Office. Organizers expect 500 recreational riders to participate. The Ride2Recovery CycleFest is a non-competitive ride that will benefit wounded veterans. The following day will see the marquee event, the Tour of the Battenkill Professional Invitational. The Professional Invitational will boast up to 25 teams totaling 200 professional and elite riders from all over the world. The epic 124 mile course will see the peloton negotiate more that 30 miles of dirt roads that have earned the event the title "America's Queen of the Classics".
Both weekends will host an event Expo that features a healthy lifestyles exhibit promoting Glens Falls hospital's comprehensive system of satellite health centers, as well as their C.R. Wood Cancer Center in Glens Falls, NY. The Expo will also provide entertainment, food, sports and fitness vendors at various locations in Cambridge and nearby Greenwich. All events start and finish in Cambridge, NY, which is convenient to the Expo. Organizers plan to produce a live race video broadcast for the Professional Invitational.
