Damiano Cunego will be racing again this weekend, after he had to abandon the Vuelta a Andalucia due to a crash. Cunego will race in the one-day races GP Insubria and GP Lugano on Saturday and Sunday.
Over the course of the week, his arm injury healed well. "I trained on the rollers for a couple of days," Cunego said. "When the pain became less, I tried riding and I had not much trouble."
This drove his decision to return to racing sooner than initially anticipated. "I decided to give it a go this weekend, after consulting with the medical staff and the directors. I'll be there with the intent to get back into the race rhythm and to check my form after the required pause."
Sports director Brent Copeland is giving some younger guys a chance. "We'll be there with Adriano Malori, Diego Ulissi, Enrico Magazzini, Vitaliy Buts, Simone Ponzi and Simon Spilak. It'll be interesting to see how they can transform their enthusiasm to the race." But Copeland knows some experience is needed. "It is important to have the experience of Mirco Lorenzetto and David Loosli. The latter will certainly be motivated as the race is on Swiss roads."
