Bahati Foundation cyclist Jorge Alvarado was struck and killed yesterday by a speeding car while training on Greenspot Road near Santa Ana Canyon Road in San Bernardino County. According to the sheriff's officials, the Honda Accord was racing two other vehicles when it crossed the center line at more than 70 mph.
Originally from Mexico, Alvarado was brought onto the Bahati Foundation Cycling Team as an amateur for the 2010 season.
The driver, 18-year-old Patrick Roraff, reportedly lost control of his car when he steered his vehicle onto the wrong side of the road while attempting to pass the other two vehicles. The occupants of the other vehicles were all seniors at a local high school.
Sheriff's investigators said in a written statement: “The three vehicles were street racing when [the driver] changed lanes to the wrong side of the road as he attempted to pass the vehicle in front of him.
"The driver “lost control of his vehicle, causing him to spin out on the east side of the road, then traverse both lanes of traffic onto the west side of the road, striking Alvarado.”
Alvarado, 28, died at the scene.
