Reigning world champion Cadel Evans (BMC Racing), former silver medallist Robbie McEwen (Katusha) and triple world time trial title holder Michael Rogers (HTC Columbia) are three of 22 riders who have been named by Cycling Australia as part of the long-list for this year’s world championships.
The trio are joined by others such as Allan Davis (Astana), Baden Cooke (Saxo Bank), Graeme Brown (Rabobank), Simon Gerrans (Team Sky) and Stuart O’Grady (Saxo Bank). The list also contains Matt Lloyd (Omega Pharma Lotto) and Richie Porte (Saxo Bank), who won the King of the Mountains and best young rider awards at the recent Giro d’Italia. One notable omission is Jack Bobridge (Garmin Transitions), who won the Under 23 time trial title last year.
Evans, Meyer and recent Tour of California winner Rogers are also pencilled in as possible entrants in the elite time trial.
Cycling Australia also announced a long-list of twelve riders for the under 23 road race. These include the Trek Livestrong riders Ben King and Timothy Roe, as well as Nicholas Walker (Holowesko Partners).
The final selection will be made much closer to the event. Cycling Australia points out that there is scope for change, with others able to join the long list. “Riders not included in the squads have the opportunity to be added on the basis of their performances prior to the next phase of selection,” it stated.
It’s certain that whichever riders are picked will be highly motivated, due to the fact that this year’s worlds will be held in Melbourne and Geelong. The championships run between September 29th and October 3rd.
