World champion still tops the pile as main rivals sit out the Tour de Suisse

cadel evansWorld champion Cadel Evans (BMC Racing) still holds the lead in the UCI’s World Ranking, with none of the other riders in the top ten scoring appreciably in the past week. The one scoring race since the ranking’s last publication was the Tour de Suisse and the top riders in that race had yet to feature anywhere near the top of the rankings before now.

The only riders in the top ten to get any points this week were Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha), who scored 3 with his third place on the mountain stage to La Punt, and Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank) who won the stage 1 time trial, led the race and then finished second in the final stage time trial. The Swiss champion’s 10 points gained see him leapfrog Michele Scarponi (Androni Giocattoli) and Ivan Basso (Liquigas-Doimo) and move from 9th to 7th.

Tour de Suisse winner Fränk Schleck (Saxo Bank) is the big mover this week, moving from 66th to 14th place.

Teams and nations also largely static

The only appreciable change to the team rankings see Team Saxo Bank rise into the top-five, thanks to Schleck’s Tour de Suisse victory. There is also little change to the country rankings, other than the USA’s points total rising thanks to Lance Armstrong (RadioShack) finishing second overall in Switzerland.
