Although certain media outlets are already reporting that the team is set to stop, it appears that there is still a sliver of hope for the Xacobeo Galicia team. However things are not looking encouraging, with just a few days left to save the team.
According to the Galician secretary general of sport, Jose Ramon Lete, the regional government will do everything in its power to try to secure a private sponsor for the Professional Continental squad.
He appeared at a press conference this morning and said that the government had ‘intensified its efforts’ and were working hard in advance of the ‘Friday deadline imposed by the International Cycling Union [UCI].’
One thing which could act in its favour is the fact that the team took a stage plus second overall in the Vuelta a España this year, thanks to the efforts of Ezequiel Mosquera. It was the biggest result in the team’s history
However, on the other hand, the Galician has now left the team and will compete instead for Vacansoleil in 2011. Without its star rider, the team loses an important element. The issue now for it and Lete is to convince potential sponsors between now and Friday that the squad is still worth investing in.
