Commonwealth Games gold medalist ran into a streetlight, which in turn toppled over, seriously injuring a 17 year old
World record holder in the U19 individual pursuit and recent Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Dale Parker, was arrested for drunk driving at 11.30pm on Friday.
According to ABC.net.au, the young talent got into his car, did a burn out, then promptly crashed into a streetlight, which fell over, and landed on the head of a 17 year old, who was just leaving a gym. The 17 year old was seriously injured.
When police arrived, Parker's blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.
Cycling South Australia's executive manager, Max Stevens, was enraged at the actions of the budding star and spared no harsh word in his assessment of the situation.
"He's one of the best cyclists that we have produced in recent years, and it would be ringing in his years what happened. He is aware that he made a huge mistake to drive while under the influence and he unfortunately will go through the process like anyone else," said the executive manager yesterday.
Stevens's initial reaction was just as stern and made it clear that there would be no preferential treatment or effort by Cycling SA to help the rider in this time.
"Dale has acted totally and utterly stupid, and he will pay for the price for what he's done. We're not going to stand behind this and spin doctor it."
Parker's judicial process will begin soon, but in the meantime, the real concern is with the innocent bystander in the hospital says Stevens.
"It's not an error in judgement, this is a snap decision to drive home while under the influence, and he will pay a huge price for it. There is no question whatsoever, Dale Parker is a stupid young man. Everyone concerned is extremely disappointed and our main focus at the moment is the young man that is in the hospital."
