Garmin-Transitions rider awarded his first “Oppy Medal” after a big year on the road and track

cameron meyerCameron Meyer (Garmin-Transitions) has been voted the Jayco 2010 Australian Cyclist of the year, and has been awarded his first Sir Hubert Opperman “Oppy” Medal, at a Gala evening at the Sofitel Melbourne in Collins, Victoria. The 22-year-old track and road rider succeeds 2009 World champion Cadel Evans (BMC Racing), who had taken the award in three of the last four years.

Meyer’s year began in perfect style with victory in the Australian Championship time trial on January 6th. It was to be the only road victory of the season for the 22-year-old, but he also took third place overall in the Tour of Oman and successfully finished the Giro d’Italia, inluding an eighth place in the final Verona time trial.

It was on the track though, where Meyer was almost unbeatable. At the World Championships in Ballerup, Denmark in March, the Australian successfully defended his points race title, and added two more rainbow jerseys as part of the team pursuit and in the Madison with Leigh Howard.

At the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India in October he took three more gold medals, in the points, scratch and team pursuit.

The other major award of the year went to Giro d’Italia mountains jersey winner Richie Porte (Saxo Bank), who received the Scody People’s Choice Award after polling the highest number of votes in a public ballot.
