Digging deep on the climbs of Willunga Hill and then unleashing a strong sprint at the end of the stage, Spanish rider Fran Ventoso raced to victory on today’s fifth leg of the Santos Tour Down Under. The Team Movistar rider pipped world under 23 road race champion Michael Matthews (Rabobank) by the slenderest of margins, with HTC-Highroad’s Mathew Goss netting third.
The latter picked up a four second time bonus and consequently moved closer to the Ochre jersey of race leadership. However the young Garmin-Cervélo rider Cameron Meyer rode strongly today to remain at the head of the general classification and has an eight second lead heading into the concluding criterium. Goss will have to ride strongly to overcome that deficit and, as was the case today, Meyer’s team will try to allow others to go clear and mop up the intermediate time bonuses before the finish.
That’s tomorrow’s big battle; today’s was won by Ventoso. “I couldn’t be happier, it has all gone perfectly. It’s super-important for me to start this way, and also for the teammates,” he said, referring to the fact that it is the first UCI WorldTour victory of the new-look squad.
“Truthfully, I was feeling like I was missing something to beat the pure sprinters, and we knew it was our opportunity today. We had to make the race difficult and get the most team-mates in the front group at the first climb, and that’s how it went. The team didn’t get a ten mark, it was 15 (out of ten). Plus, having Arrieta as sports director is a luxury. He has just got off the bike [retired] and knows perfectly what your sensations are, what goes through your mind…”
Meyer was also pleased, losing a little time to Ventoso, Matthews and Goss due to the finishing bonuses, but limiting the losses to that final gallop. If the goals were to make sure that his rivals didn’t get the early points, and then to remain with the other contenders until the end, then things went to plan.
“At the end of the day it was a perfect situation for us," he said,. “Obviously it looks like Matt Goss has picked up a few more seconds and closed the gap, and so has Michael Matthews, but the plan was not let him get the full 12 seconds back and make sure we held on to the jersey today."
Breakaway group absorbs intermediate bonuses:
Aside from the finishing gallop which would have the aforementioned bonuses up for grabs, there was also an intermediate sprint on each of the two opening laps. These both came at Snapper Point, 23.3 kilometres and 63.6 kilometres after the start, and offered time bonuses. Garmin’s tactic was to try to allow riders go clear and mop up the available sprint places, and things went exactly to plan.
Eight riders pushed ahead five kilometres after the start, namely Davide Viganò (Leopard – Trek), John Murphy (BMC Racing Team), Sebastian Haedo (Saxo Bank – Sungard), Michael Hepburn (UniSA – Australia), Tanel Kangert (Astana), Joost Van Leijin (Vacansoleil), Eduard Vorganov and Juan Horrach (both Katusha).
These had a lead of over one and a half minutes by the first sprint, where Vigano beat Haedo and Murphy. By sprint two they were two and a half minutes ahead, with Murphy, Vigano and Horrach netting the top three placings.
After that, the riders raced on towards two tough ascents of Old Willunga Hill. The peloton was keen to slug things out on the climb and reeled the break on the early slopes; the first mountain prime was then taken by Luke Roberts (UniSA-Australia), who beat Angel Madrazo (Team Movistar), Ben Hermans (Team Radio Shack) and Richie Porte (Saxo Bank Sungard) to bolster his overall lead in that competition.
After the summit, multiple Tour winner Lance Armstrong (Team RadioShack) raced clear with six others; Jurgen Van De Walle (Omega Pharma-Lotto), Stefan Denifl (Leopard Trek), Sergei Ivanov (Katusha), Iñaki Isasi (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Jose Ivan Gutierrez (Movistar Team) and Luis Pasamontes (both Movistar Team). These were out front for approximately ten minutes, but where then hauled back by the peloton.
It raced towards the second and final ascent of the climb, and there Ben Hermans (RadioShack), Richie Porte (Saxo Bank) and Jack Bobridge (Garmin-Cervelo) ripped clear, got a gap and crossed the summit in that order.
They kept pulling together in a bid to stay away but were caught with ten kilometres to go; Bobridge crashed soon afterwards on a left hand bend, but was able to remount and finish the stage. Meanwhile Ventoso led out the sprint and was able to hold off Matthews and Goss, who were closing in on him but ran out of time.
“This is a massive victory for me, but more important for the team,” he said afterwards. “We have a new sponsor this year and to win is really important.”
Matthews went close to taking his second victory of the race, and was left with mixed feelings after missing out by a couple of centimetres. He was closing on Ventoso all the way but the line came a fraction too soon.
"Awesome ride for me. Being that close to a win is a little devastating, but it was awesome for the team and me,” he said. “Laurens [ten Dam] got up in the front of the bunch so we are still in the top ten, so, it was a really good ride for Rabobank," said Matthews. "I definitely did not expect it coming in to this, with so many good riders here.
"I have pretty good form so I was pretty confident that I would go alright, but definitely not two podiums."
As for Goss, he regretted an error which cost him more points. “The day went alright, I ended up in the bunch I wanted to be in,” he said. “It wasn't a perfect sprint for me I made a bit of a mistake. I tried to get on the side with less wind but I got close to the barrier a little bit.
"I still managed to get third and I'm a few seconds away from the lead so I'm there for a crack tomorrow."
He and the HTC-Highroad team will do everything they can to wrest the jersey off the shoulders of Meyer. Goss is the closest challenger at eight seconds, while Ten Dam and Matthews are ten and twelve seconds behind.
Ventoso, Ben Swift (Team Sky), Blel Kadri (AG2R La Mondiale) and last year’s race winner André Greipel (Omega Pharma-Lotto) are within 27 seconds of the ochre jersey, and will swoop if Meyer shows any weakness.
The final stage of the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under covers 90 kilometres in Adelaide tomorrow.
