Tour de Langkawi: Guardini grabs win number two in Butterworth, extends yellow jersey advantage

Italian rider fastest sprinter thus far

Andrea GuardiniAfter pro win number one yesterday, Andrea Guardini wasted little time in clocking up number two, sprinting home again at the head of the field at the Tour de Langkawi.

The 21 year old is racing in only his second day as a pro, and has a two-from-two record here in Malaysia this evening. He solidified his grip on the yellow jersey with today’s triumph, beating Boris Shpilevsky (Tabriz Petrochemical Team), Malaysian rider Anuar Manan (Terengganu ProAsia Cycling) and the rest of the peloton into Butterworth.

Once the bonuses were calculated out, Guardini’s overall lead increased. He’s now nine seconds clear of Manan and 13 ahead of Deon Locke (Team Champion System), with the bulk of the main field 21 seconds back. While he accepts that his climbing will not be good enough to win the race, he’s lapping up his time in yellow and plans to chase more stage wins.

“I am very happy,” the Farnese Vini - Neri Sotttoli rider smiled at the finish. “Today’s win shows that yesterday’s win was not a fluke. I’d like to say a big thank you to my team because they rode at the front from the first to the last kilometres. [Elia] Favilli dropped me off with 300 metres to go and I finished the job.”

Guardini said that the sprint itself was straightforward, but the lead-up was itself pretty complicated due to the flat, straight finale. Wearing the jersey also meant that he had a string of people following him in the finale, the last 24 hours going a huge way to raise awareness of his ability.

“It was more difficult to win today than yesterday, because the finishing line was five kilometres long,” he explained. “Many teams were still fresh and the finish line was easier to get to [for his rivals]. There were many crashes in the last kilometre, it was hard to avoid them.”

Fortunately he did, and stage success was his for the taking. He was asked afterwards if he thought other victories were in store this week, given that in previous years sprinters who have triumphed early on have dominated the sprints throughout the event.

“It is always difficult to win,” he answered. “Today I had to confirm yesterday’s win. It is very good to have made it two out of two, though, and tomorrow I will try to win again.”

Two man break gives way to eventual bunch sprint:

A total of 137 riders began stage two of Le Tour de Langkawi, with no overnight retirements from the race. The riders faced a 145.4 kilometre trek from Kangar to Butterworth, a route which featured three intermediate sprints and lacked any categorised climbs. That meant that overnight mountains leader Koen de Kort was guaranteed to retain his red jersey providing he finished the stage, but left all the other classifications open to be disputed.

Five kilometres into the stage, Shinichi Fukushima (Terengganu ProAsia Cycling), David Pell (Drapac Porsche), Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago CSF Inox) and Zainal Mohd Nur Rizuan (Malaysian national team) broke clear. They were hauled back by kilometre ten. One kilometre later, the Australian Deon Locke (Team Champion System) surged ahead and was quickly joined by the Iranian Hamid Shirisisan (Suren Cycling Team). Twenty-five kilometres into the stage, the duo had built a lead of five minutes 15 seconds; this continued to grow, extending by the time Locke took the first intermediate sprint at Jitra (km 32.4) and peaking at six minutes five seconds at kilometre 44.

Locke beat Shirisisan for the second intermediate sprint at Guar Cempedak (km 83.2), where the gap was down to under four minutes. The two riders stopped cooperating very soon afterwards, but remained clear until several kilometres after Shirisan took the day’s final intermediate sprint at Sungai Petani (km 111.4). They were finally caught with 25 kilometres to go.

There were other attacks but no riders succeeded in opening a lasting advantage. A bunch sprint was the result, and having avoided the crashes which took down Yukiya Arashiro (Team Europcar) and others, Guardini thundered home at the head of the peloton.

Manan took third and his two third placings in intermediate sprints saw him finish the day nine seconds behind Guardini in the general classification.

“For today, my target was to try to get the points jersey,” he said at the finish. “Getting the best Asian rider jersey is a bonus for me today. I collected points at the first and second intermediate sprints, but some breakaway riders were away and so I lost some possible points for the green jersey today.”

He pledged to continue to fight in the sprints on tomorrow’s144.9 kilometre stage to Sitiawan, with both the green and the yellow jerseys being big motivations. 2010 points jersey and stage winner Manan became a national hero during last year’s event and is fired up to try to exceed that performance.
