Tour de Langkawi: Monsalve wins second mountain stage, Nino Corredor in yellow

Plenty of racing left over next five days

Jonnatha MonsalveAny concerns that the general classification of the 2011 Tour de Langkawi could essentially be settled a full five days from the end of the race were put to rest today, when a hard fought mountain battle on the climb of Genting Highlands resulted in small time gaps and a tight GC.

Back to back mountain-top finishes in the race have shaken up the overall standings, but with five flat days ahead, the race remains very much on and any one of a number of riders could be crowned the final winner in Kuala Lumpur next Tuesday.

Today’s stage saw overnight leader Takeaki Ayabe (Aisan Racing Team) crack and place only 38th at the top of the hors category Genting Highlands, one of the steepest climbs in cycling. He lost six minutes 19 seconds to the stage winner Jonnatha Monsalve (Androni Giocattoli) and runner-up Libardo Nino Corredor (Le Tua), who took over the yellow jersey.

Nino Corredor is, at 42 years of age, the oldest competitor in the race, and is a full 23 years older than the youngest, Lachlan Morton. The 19 year old also fared well today, netting a superb seventh at the top of the mist-covered climb and thus highlighting his bright talent.

Monsalve is 21 years of age and therefore also very young. He and Nino were part of a seven man group of riders who were together at the end of the 124.3 kilometre stage, and who pulled clear in the sprint for the line. He was delighted to take those honours.

“I would like to thank the team, the masseurs, the mechanics – everyone has worked really well for me,” he said. “Especially Emanuele Sella, who did a great job on the climb. I want to thank [team manager] Gianni Savio who gave me the confidence. I did everything that he said. I remained on the wheel of Pozzovivo, and in the sprint I played it well with the help of Sella. He [Savio] told me that I can win the race today and we made it.”

Monsalve took the stage and the mountains jersey, while Nino Corredor took the yellow jersey. He returned in September 2009 from a two year ban for EPO and is aiming for a big result in Malaysia before finally retiring from professional-level racing.

“To tell the truth, I am very happy today. I am very happy to lead the Tour de Langkawi and to be in Malaysia. I didn’t know much about the country before I came, and it is even better than what I expected,” he said.

“I am very happy with today and now I hope I will be able to maintain the lead until the end of the Tour. This is my last race at continental level and so I hope for the best…after this I will return to Columbia and race at amateur level.”

Early attackers aiming to open big lead:

Gambling on the GC favourites watching each other rather than thinking of the stage win, six riders went clear just three kilometres after the start in Tapah. Hilton Clarke (United Healthcare), Kenny Van Hummel (Skil-Shimano), Benjamin Gourgue (Landbouwkrediet), Gu Jang Kyung (Korea), Sea Keong Loh (Malaysian national team) and Bradley Potgieter (MTN Qhubeka) combined together and pulled away from the peloton.

Van Hummel took the first intermediate sprint, with Potgieter taking the remaining two. The Aisan team of race leader Takeaki Ayabe and the Colnago squad of Domenico Pozzovivo were riding behind and so the gap didn’t rise much above three minutes. It had dropped to one minute 50 by the bottom of Genting Highlands, where the slopes soon split both the break and the bunch.

Jang and Gourgue dropped their former breakaway companions and pushed towards the top; Gourgue soon fell back, while Jan was caught and then dropped by French climber Pierre Rolland (Europcar). He was chased by nine riders, namely Emanuele Sella (Androni Giocattoli), Jonnatha Monsalve (Androni Giocattoli), Pozzovivo, Hyosuk Gong (Korea National Team), Ghader Mizbani and Hozzein Askari (both Tabriz Petrochemical Team), Alex Coutts (Giant Kenda), Amir Zargari, Rahim Emami, Mirsamad Pourseyedi (all Azad University team), Lachlan Morton (Chipotle Development team) and Dennis Van Niekerk (MTN Qhubeka).

Rolland raced on past the five kilometres to go point and was joined soon afterwards by Morton, who was riding superbly for a 19 year old. The two rode well together and opened a 20 seconds gap over the Sella-led group, but were caught by the chasers with over two kilometres to go.

Pozzovivo attacked but was brought back; Monsalve was then strongest in sprint for the line, with himself and Nino Corredor opening gaps over the others.

The two will duel for the yellow jersey tomorrow, with several other riders also being close enough to strike. Nino Corredor is riding well and promised he’d do what he could to hold on.

“The remainder of the race is relatively flat. I will count on my team, pay attention to the riders who are close to me on GC. I think I have good form, but I have to pay attention – it is very tight,” he said.

Apart from the GC contenders, those disputing the points jersey will also be sprinting for the primes. Double stage winner Andrea Guardini holds the blue sprinter’s jersey but is actually level on points with Malaysian favourite Anuar Manan. They are set to have a major battle in the five remaining stages.

“Fortunately we have had two stages with breakaways. The riders in the breaks took the points and that gave us two rest days and I managed to recover, get some energy back for the five coming stages,” he said. “These five stages will be very hard for me…I am not talking about the course as it is flat but there are many points up for grabs. There will be many sprints and I will try to retain this lead, mostly with stage finishes. I will also have to ride for intermediate sprints.”

Tomorrow’s sixth stage stretches 106.7 kilometres from Rawang to Putrajaya and features just two fourth category climbs, as well as three intermediate sprints. A bunch sprint is the most likely outcome, but there will be plenty of hard racing along the way in the clashes for the yellow and green jerseys.
