Tour de Langkawi: Nino Corredor retains yellow, Guardini nets his third sprint victory of the race

Fast, mainly flat stage leads to a new wearer of the points jersey

Andrea GuardiniOne day after the big showdown on Genting Highlands and two after the first mountain stage took place, the sprinters had their say again in the Tour de Langkawi. The battleground for the race swung back towards flatter terrain and, as he had done on stages one and two, the 21 year old Italian neo-pro Andrea Guardini (Farnese Vini –Neri Sottoli) galloped to an impressive victory.

He kicked for the line in Putrajaya from a long way out, successfully fending off the attempts of Malaysian rider Anuar Manan to get by. However victory by Manan in an earlier intermediate sprint saw the blue points jersey pass to the Terengganu ProAsia Cycling competitor, and it is something he wants to keep until the race finish in Kuala Lumpur next Tuesday.

Ditto for Colombian rider Nino Corredor, who is not only the oldest rider in the race at 42 years of age, but is also the overall race leader and is determined to keep yellow. He faced no major threat to his jersey today and retains his two second lead over Jonnatha Monsalve (Androni Giocattli).

“This was been a very fast stage with many attempts at breakaways,” the Le Tua rider said at the post race press conference. “The race started very fast from the gun and there was a breakaway for the second hotspot sprint. Fortunately the Androni team worked a lot to close the gap to the breakaway riders and my team-mates told me about the course at the end. That is how I kept the yellow jersey today.”

Nino CorredorDue to a threatening move containing the fifth-placed rider Rahim Emami (Azad University), Monsalve and his squad decided to drive the pace to bring it back. They have greater collective strength than the Le Tua squad and while Monsalve is not in yellow, he needs to ride as such in cases like these in order to ensure he still has a good chance.

“This was a very fast stage and when a breakaway went, there was one dangerous rider on GC. That is why our team went to the front of the bunch and rode flat to catch the breakaway,” he explained. “There are four more stages remaining. We see that the sprinters are very focussed on scoring points, so it is going to be hard. But we will see how it goes tomorrow.”

The hard racing began from the opening minutes, due in part to the fact that the first climb topped out just 7.6 kilometres after the start in Rawang. On the category four ascent of Bukit Kanching, Albert Timmer (Skil Shimano) beat Mirsamad Pourseyedi (Azad University) and Gang Xu (Max Success Sports) to the top. He had started the day fifth overall in the mountains classification and was trying to improve on that.

Following a regrouping, the sprinters went head to head in the Ulu Klang sprint, 26.3 kilometres into the stage. There the Malaysian favourite Manan beat Guardini, gaining two points and moving ahead of him in the overall points standings by the same margin. The aggressive start was reflected in the fact that a total of 48 kilometres was covered in the first hour of racing.

Despite that pace, fifteen riders went clear a little later and from this group Boris Shpilevsky (Tabriz Petrochemical Team) beat Suhardi Hassan (Malaysian National Team) to the intermediate sprint at Kajang (km 54.6). These were hauled back but then an important six man escape pushed ahead.

Paolo Locatelli (Colnago CSF Inox Pro), Jose Mendes (CCC Polstat Polkowiche), Benjamin Gourgue (Landbouwkredeit), David Pell (Drapac Professional Cycling), Kenichi Suzuki (Aisan Racing Team) and Mirsamad Pourseyedi (Azad University Team) held a 39 second advantage on the first of four passages over the finish line, where Locatelli beat Suzuki and Pell for the day’s third and final intermediate sprint.

Monsalve’s Androni team started driving the page and were joined by the sprinters’ squads. The combined efforts saw everything come back together before the line, and in the ensuing bunch sprint Guardini got the better of Manan once again.

“It is a great achievement to get three stage wins out of four so far,” the Italian said, reacting to the victory he picked up today. “There is a big battle for the hot spot sprints and the classification for points is very tight. Anuar Manan is extremely determined to win this classification. There is only one point between us, but I am fine with it for now.”

Manan is clearly very motivated, and will do what he can to maintain his advantage. “Today I didn’t get the win, but I got the blue [jersey]. I would like to thank my team-mates who worked hard today. I will try to keep the blue jersey until the end. I will try to win a stage, but today I didn’t get to do that…I got second and am a little bit unhappy, but I will try tomorrow.”

Next up is a 149.5 kilometres from Banting to Tampin. As was the case today, this will include two category four climbs and three intermediate sprints. A bunch gallop is once again the most expected outcome, but the scrap for the yellow jersey could in theory produce some surprises.
