Frenchman was slipstreaming a truck on eve of Tour of Qatar

Yoann OffredoFDJ rider Yoann Offredo is uncertain for the Tour of Qatar after what could have been a disastrous accident while training. The 24 year old rider was travelling at 90km/h behind a truck when he crashed, blacking out.

“I fell in training today on the eve of the Tour of Qatar, while I was at 90km/ h behind a truck," he told Cyclism'Actu. “I lost consciousness but I only have numerous road burns.”

Given the nature of the crash, the outcome could have been extremely serious. Fortunately there didn’t appear to be any lasting issues for him, but it remains to be seen if he will be able to ride the ASO-organised event. Cyclism’Actu reported that other tests will be performed on him before a final decision is made.

His fall highlights a danger with slipstreaming motor vehicles. Aside from the high speeds, another issue is the inability to be able to see the road ahead and avoid any holes or stones.

Offredo was third in last year’s GP Ouest France in Plouay, a ProTour event. He is regarded as a promising young rider.
