Expected to resume training on Wednesday

alberto losadaAlberto Losada broke his hand during a heavy crash in the final event of the 2011 Challenge de Mallorca, Trofeo Magaluf-Palmanova. The Katusha rider was treated in the medical center in Barcelona. The operation went smoothly and he is expected to start his training again already on Wednesday.

The doctors decided against a metal plate, using screws instead to fix the fracture in Losada's hand. The operation took a little more than an hour and the doctors were quite happy after the procedure. "It went to perfection. Now we have to hope that the inflammation goes away and Tuesday we can evaluate the situation," the doctors said.

The medical team hopes that Losada can resume training quickly. "We think that if there are no complications, he can start training on Wednesday, although ideally he will set out easy, to avoid sweat on the hand. This could provoke an infection in the wound where the screw is." The doctors would rather see him take off some more time. "The best is to let it heal, then to start the intensive training." Besides the broken hand Losada also had cuts on the hand and open wounds on his left hip.

Losada turned professional in 2006 with the Kaiku team. He spent 2007 until 2010 with the Caisse d'Epargne team and moved to Katusha this season. While he has now wins to his credit, his best results was a sixth place overall in the Vuelta a Andalucia - Ruta del Sol. He was also second in the 2006 Escalada a Montjuïc, behind Igor Anton.
