Quick Step rider Kevin De Weert is an uncertain starter for Tuesday’s stage of Paris-Nice, following a crash approximately 30 kilometres from the finish of stage two.
The 28 year old hit the ground heavily and while fractures have been ruled out, he is nevertheless pretty beaten up. “The fall was really awful. We were going pretty fast,” he explained. “A rider in front of me fell and there was no way I could avoid him. I slid for about 50 metres on my right side but I wanted to finish the stage. I think I was lucky, anyway, because the fall could have had much worse consequences.”
The most serious injury was an injury to his right leg near his groin, which required stitches. He has also trauma to his knee, as well as bruises to his right shoulder and hip.
He was treated at the Montargis General Hospital, where he underwent x-rays. The team will wait until the morning before talking to him about whether to continue or not. A good night’s sleep would improve his chances of that happening, but it will also depend on how stiff he is.
