Thanks to his victory in Milan-Sanremo plus his general consistency this season, Australian rider Matt Goss has taken over leadership in the UCI World Tour rankings from his HTC Highroad team-mate, Paris-Nice victor Tony Martin.
The newly recalculated rankings factor in both Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-Sanremo, and elevate Goss from third to first.
Italian rider Michele Scarponi (Lampre-ISD) enters the rankings by jumping in at number two, holding 118 points to Goss’s 203. He is ten points ahead of Tirreno victor Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) and Martin, with Santos Tour Down Under winner Cameron Meyer just two points further back in fifth.
Meyer drops from second to fifth, while the Paris-Nice runner-up Andreas Klöden also moves downwards, going from fourth to sixth.
Three riders have entered the top ten as a result of their performances of late. Cancellara’s time trial win in Tirreno-Adriatico and his runner-up slot in Saturday’s Classic position him seventh, while another Tirreno stage winner, Philippe Gilbert, is eighth after his third place in Sanremo. He and Cancellara are tied for points and look set to continue their tussle in the spring Classics ahead.
Robert Gesink also enters the rankings, jumping in tenth courtesy of his second overall in Tirreno-Adriatico.
No change to leadership of Nations’ table:
Goss’s result in San Remo consolidates Australia’s positions at the top the nations ranking. At 497 points, it is far ahead of Italy’s 361, the Mediterranean country roaring up from eleventh courtesy of its riders’ performances in Tirreno and Sanremo. That rise sees Martin’s Germany drop a place to third, while Great Britain also slips a place to fourth.
The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, France and Portugal complete the top ten. The first two of those have a chance to progress in the upcoming spring Classics.
HTC stays solid in team’s rankings:
There’s been a fair degree of shuffling around in the teams’ table, but HTC-Highroad remains solid at the top. Rabobank has moved closer, going from fourth to second, but it is still 138 points shy of HTC’s 354, and needs a big push if it is to ascent that crucial further step.
The BMC Racing Team has jumped into the rankings in third place, knocking Team RadioShack down to fourth, and helping push Sky Procycling from second to fifth. Scarponi’s Lampre –ISD team goes from 13th to sixth, and could continue rising if he performs well in the Volta a Catalunya.
Three squads which should make a lot of progress in the Classics are currently in places eight through tenth; Omega Pharma-Lotto, Garmin-Cervélo and Leopard Trek have not performed at full capacity as yet, but that should change in the next month.
